The Robert Morris men’s basketball team, coming off a historic victory over Toledo Saturday, will return to Horizon League action Wednesday, Dec. 17, with a home game against Youngstown State.
Tipoff for the league contest is set for 7 p.m. at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.
The Penguins, 6-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play, are led by Cris Carroll, who is averaging 14.9 points per game, and Rich Rolf at 11.0.
The Colonials enter the contest with an 8-4 overall record and are 1-1 in Horizon League action.
Robert Morris is coming off one of its most historic wins when it defeated the Toledo Rockets, 75-70, Saturday. The Colonials took an early 12-9 lead, but the Rockets answered by scoring 23 consecutive points and led by as much as 21. Robert Morris chipped away at the lead but trailed 42-24 at half.
The Colonials came out on fire in the second half and went on an early 19-3 run to tighten the game at 45-42.
The second half comeback, where RMU outscored Toledo 51-28, was led by the Colonials’ starting five. Ryan Prather had 17 points and 10 rebounds while DeSean Goode finished with 17 points, Albert Vargas with 16 and Nikolaos Chitikoudis with his own double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Sonny Wilson led Toledo with a game-high 21 points.
The comeback was the second-largest in Robert Morris history, behind only a 23-point comeback in 2008 over the Colonials’ next opponent, Youngstown State.
Colonial women returns to Horizon League play against Detroit
The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will take on Detroit-Mercy at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the UPMC Events Center on the Robert Morris campus.
As they enter the contest, the Titans are 3-5 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League action and are led by Jasmine Edwards, who averages 12.4 points per game, and Makaly Jackson at 11.9.
The Colonials are 7-2 overall and 1-0 in conference after Saturday’s 72-44 nonconference win over the Division II California (PA) Vulcans.
The Colonials took the lead early in the first half and led 32-18 at halftime. Robert Morris never relinquished the lead due to dominating in the paint with 40 points and scoring 20 points on second-chance attempts.
The Colonials’ inside game handled the boards with a 46-33 advantage, and they also scored 13 points off turnovers. Eva Levingston led RMU with 16 points, Aislin Malcolm added 14 and Bailey Kuhns 11 and Layke Fields each contributed 10.
Alicia Young led California with 14 points.
Women’s hockey shuts out Long Island twice
The Robert Morris women’s hockey team posted a pair of shutout victories over Long Island University in back-to-back, nonconference games over the weekend.
Friday’s game was a defensive battle as both teams experienced scoreless first and third periods. The Colonials, though, scored twice in the second period on goals by Alaina Giampietro and Taylor Storey, giving RMU a 2-0 lead which it never relinquished. Maggie Hatch was solid in net for the Colonials and recorded 26 saves in the 2-0 shutout.
The two teams tangled again the following day, and it was showcased by an RMU offensive outburst. Rowyn Ringor, Morgan Giannone and Storey scored in the first period, giving RMU a 3-0 lead. The second period saw goals by Linnea Misner and a second goal by Giannone, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Colonials never took their foot off the gas in the third period and recorded goals on Ringor’s second goal, two goals by Jessica McKinnon and Giannone’s third, giving her the hat trick. Hatch had 30 saves for RMU and recorded her second shutout in as many days.
Robert Morris is 10-12-2 overall and 6-6-2 in Atlantic Hockey America Conference play. The Colonials do not play again until Jan. 9-10 when they host Syracuse at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center – Clearview Arena – on Neville Island.
Robert Morris’ men’s team will enjoy a lengthy break before taking on Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Fairfield, Conn.
