RMU women get early start in taking on Northern Kentucky Saturday

The Robert Morris women’s basketball team will make a rare morning appearance on the hardwood Saturday, taking on Northen Kentucky in an 11 a.m. Horizon League matchup at the UPMC Events Center in Moon Township.

Northern Kentucky enters the game with a 7-11 overall record and is 4-3 in conference action.  The fourth-place Norse, who are on a four-game win streak, are led by Karina Bystry, who is averaging 12.3 points per game, and Maddie Moody at 10.9 ppg.

Robert Morris is 11-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play, including a 60-58 win over Northern Kentucky on the road in a game played Dec. 7. Eva Levingston’s two free throws with 33 seconds left gave RMU a five-point lead before Northern Kentucky’s Mya Meredith converted three free throws to cut it to 60-58. RMU made one final defensive stop to seal the win.

The third-place Colonials are coming off an impressive 74-64 conference win over the Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodons on Thursday evening at the UPMC Events Center.

The Colonials came out of the gates quickly to lead 13-2 and continued an impressive offensive showing leading to a 34-26 halftime advantage.

Purdue-FW turned the tide early in the second half with four consecutive 3-point conversions to take the lead at 42-38, but the Colonials immediately went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead.

Robert Morris continued its excellent shooting and built a 16-point lead, hitting 50% from the field and the 3-point line, as well as hitting 91% from the free-throw line.  Defensively, the Colonials had five steals and caused 16 turnovers.

Aislin Malcolm scored a game-high 20 points for RMU and Mariam Traore added 17.
