In the penultimate week of fall high school soccer section play, both girls and boys matches excited fans in attendance. Carlynton’s boys and girls teams both had a week of ups and downs, while Our Lady of Sacred Heart’s boys varsity team seems to do nothing but win as the playoffs approach.

In Monday’s action, the Carlynton girls team set a single-season record for victories with an 8-2 win over Serra Catholic. That gave the Cougars their 13th win of the season, eclipsing the win total of the 2016 team.

Eight different players scored for Carlynton – Gigi Choate, Riley Mauro, Sophia O’Brien, Bella D’Antonio, Riley Sunderland, Greta Schriver, Grace Prepelka and Quinland Delresario. O’Brien contributed three assists while Choate had two.

Carlynton, which is 8-4 in Class A Section 3 and 13-4 overall, closes out regular-season play Wednesday at Beth-Center.

In boys action Monday, Carlynton rolled to a 7-0 blanking of South Allegheny. Mateo Carrasco scored three goals and assisted on four others while Hayden Wertz scored twice and Hamza Alezzo and Sajjad Al Nawadi each contributed one goal and one assist.

On Oct. 7, Carlynton’s girls had a close match at home with the Aquinas Academy but pulled out a 1-0 win. The Cougars had already qualified for the playoffs, unlike their opponents, and had four consecutive wins going into the match.

Both teams started the match trading offensive possession, but both the Cougars and Crusaders defenses kept the clean sheet early on. However, the Cougars were able to break the deadlock when Choate fed a ball through to Mauro.

Mauro, the sophomore goal-scorer, received the ball on the run and continued toward the onrushing Crusaders goalkeeper. Mauro adroitly avoided the goalkeeper coming straight for her, and coolly slotted home for her 22nd goal of the season.

Aquinas Academy continued to press, but the Cougars’ defense and goalkeeper Anita O’Leary kept the clean sheet and advantage for their team.

The five-game win streak ended two days later, though, in a 4-0 loss to Sewickley Academy, which is tied for first in the section with Seton LaSalle at 9-1.

In boys action last week, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart posted a 3-0 win over Carlynton.

It was senior night for this penultimate section game, and the seniors certainly turned out for OLSH, at the very least.

Senior Seth Therrien scored two goals in the match. The other goal for OLSH was scored by Isaac Tarbuk. This win leaves OLSH 9-1 in Class A Section 3 and 12-2 overall while Carlynton is 7-3 in the section and 12-5 overall.

Carlynton bounced back from the loss to OLSH, beating Serra Catholic 9-0 on Oct. 10.

In other action involving West Hills area schools, Montour defeated Moon, 3-2, in girls action and Sewickley Academy edged Bishop Canevin, 1-0, in boys action.
