Sto-Rox School District directors hire new superintendent, curriculum director

A veteran of more than two decades of work in the education field will take the reins of the Sto-Rox School District beginning July 1.

Sonya Crues, currently serving as the chief of schools for STEM Preparatory Academy in Nashville, Tenn., was named to lead the Sto-Rox district in a meeting of the district board of directors last week.

The district had been working with Devopar Consulting since February to find a permanent replacement for Megan Van Fossan, whom the district hired in May 2022 but was replaced by acting superintendent Ron Sofo in November 2024.

Sofo, a career educator, served as superintendent of the Freedom Area School District and held various administrator positions with Pittsburgh Public Schools before coming to Sto-Rox.

Crues, whose contract with the Sto-Rox district runs through Dec. 31, 2028, will earn an annual salary of $140,000.

She has served in her current position for STEM Preparatory Academy for one year, according to her LinkedIn profile. She also has held the title of managing director of academics for the school since February 2023.

Prior to her employment with STEM Preparatory Academy, Crues spent six months with the Tennessee Department of Education, and before moving to Tennessee she was the director of personnel for the Maple Heights City School District in Ohio for a little over two years.

Crues graduated from East High School in Youngstown, Ohio, and later became chief of schools for the Youngstown City School District after serving as a district principal and chief of secondary education. She also spent 11 years as a principal in the Akron City Schools District.

In addition to approving the hiring of Crues, the Sto-Rox board, at its May 22 meeting, also hired Anthony Paull for the newly created role of director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

He will earn an annual salary of $121,000 and like Crues will begin his new position on July 1.

In his new role, Paull will support Crues in implementing curriculum, planning assessments and coordinating services.

Paull has been serving as director of curriculum and assessment for the South Side Area School District in Beaver County since 2022.

A South Hills native, Paull started his career as a science teacher before serving as a principal in the West Greene and South Side area school districts.
