Two West Hills students chosen to receive WPIAL scholar-athlete award

Two West Hills area high school students have been named recipients of the 34th annual WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award.

Joelle Ludwick, a senior at Montour High School, and Bishop Canevin senior Braiden Sudor are among 20 students selected for the honor from a group of 158 nominees.

Ludwick, Sudor and the other 18 winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the college of their choice. Area students have received $759,000 in scholarship funds since the program launched in 1992.

Ludwick, who has compiled a 4.837 GPA at Montour, collected 11 varsity letters – four each in cross country and indoor track and field, and three in outdoor track and field. She captained all three teams and helped Montour win WPIAL cross country team titles as a freshman and sophomore.

The Spartans captured the PIAA cross country title during her freshman year, and they were undefeated section champions during all four of Ludwick’s years on the team.

Montour senior Joelle Ludwick is one of 20 students chosen to receive the WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete award.

Ludwick, who recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the Athletes of Action nonprofit group, owns Montour’s second-fastest times in the indoor 1,600-meter run, 1-mile run, 3,000-meter run and 3,200-meter run and third-fastest 5K cross country time.

She has volunteered for a number of local organizations and served on the executive boards of both the National Honor Society and Best Buddies organization.

Ludwick plans to study biochemistry and hopes to work in the health care field.

Sudor, who carries a 4.32 GPA, won 12 varsity letters in football, wrestling and track and field. He served as captain of the Bishop Canevin football team and Carlynton wrestling team for three years each.

Sudor helped lead Bishop Canevin to a WPIAL football championship as a freshman and won an individual section wrestling title as a sophomore. He was named to the Class 1A all-state football team by Triblive.com following his senior season and made all-conference all four years.

Sudor also earned a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Peer team, which recognizes 11 area high school football players who go above and beyond to provide mentor-like support for their teammates.

Sudor also was named as one of six finalists for the sixth annual Bill Fralic Memorial Award, which goes to the best two-way senior lineman in the WPIAL. He was the finalist group’s Class 1A representative.

Sudor owns school records for career pins and wins in wrestling and single-season and career marks for forced fumbles in football.

Off the field, Sudor serves as class president, homeroom house captain, Junior Achievement supervisor and a school student ambassador. He’s a member of a variety of clubs and has given his time to a number of causes and organizations.

Sudor plans to study business law and play football at Duquesne.

Six other West Hills area student-athletes were among the 158 nominees for this year’s James Collins Award. They were Logan Farbacher of Cornell (baseball, football), Josh Koren of Moon (baseball, golf, hockey, lacrosse), Andrew Prunier of Montour (soccer), Lillian Snyder of Moon (flag football, soccer), Vann Kavals of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (baseball, basketball, football) and Gianna Mosca of OLSH (cross country, swimming and diving, track and field).
