Abby Cleary scored a game-high 14 points to lift the Montour girls basketball team to a 40-35 victory over visiting Central Valley Monday night.
Sofia Brandy contributed three 3-pointers for the winners, who improved to 3-1 on the season.
Montour led 21-19 at halftime, but Central Valley pulled in front 24-21 with a little less than 6 minutes to play in the third quarter.
Cleary then came up with a steal and Zoe Woessner converted a layup to trim the Warriors’ lead to 24-23.
After Addyson Kranak hit a shot in the lane to put Montour in front 25-24, Central Valley answered with a basket, and a free throw left the Warriors with a 27-25 lead.
But Montour’s Claire Bannon knocked down a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in the quarter to put the Spartans on top, 28-27, and they never trailed again.
Cleary scored nine of her 14 points in the final quarter, converting all four of her free-throw attempts in the final minute to preserve the lead for Montour.
Montour coach Jordan Giles said she was proud of the way her team stuck together throughout the game.
“We talked about how we know there is going to be mistakes, but it’s how they respond and control what they can control,” she said afterward. “They worked very hard, never gave up and played together.”
GIRLS: OLSH 57, Serra Catholic 42
Claudia Ierullo scored 14 points and Leah Parker contributed 10 to help Our Lady of the Sacred Heart remain unbeaten at 3-0 with a win over the Eagles.
The Chargers led 13-8 after one quarter but Serra wouldn’t go away, and OLSH led by just six at halftime, 25-19.
But the Chargers turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and outscored the Eagles 18-3. That proved to be the difference for OLSH, which had scoring contributions from eight players.
Abby Geniss drained five 3-pointers for Serra Catholic and led all scorers with 20 points.
GIRLS: Blackhawk 49, Moon 20
Aubree Hupp scored 19 points and the visiting Cougars used a huge first half to run past the Tigers.
Blackhawk sprinted to a 19-4 first-quarter lead and then opened it up more in the second quarter, outscoring Moon 14-2 to build a 33-6 halftime lead.
Jaedin Griggs led the Tigers with 14 points.
BOYS: Butler 80, Bishop Canevin 67
Tayt Lucas and Ayden Andrews combined for 44 points and the Golden Tornado sped to an 11-point first-quarter lead that proved too much for the Crusaders to overcome.
Lucas drilled seven 3-pointers on the night, four of which came in the opening quarter, and Andrews contributed two more treys in the opening frame as Butler outscored the visitors 27-16. The Golden Tornado continued to drain 3-pointers in the second quarter, hitting on four more to expand their lead to 44-27 at halftime.
Bishop Canevin regrouped in the second half, outscoring the host team 40-36, but it wasn’t enough.
“We went down big early,” Crusaders coach Aaron McGee said afterward. “But I was happy with how our guys battled back and competed.”
Lucas finished with 23 points and Andrews 21 for Butler, which connected on 13 3-pointers on the night. Andrew Gettinger added 15 for the winners.
Drew Allen scored 21 points to lead Bishop Canevin while Damar Olds added 12 and Jackson Maddix 11.
