High school basketball: Montour boys cruise to win in tournament tuneup; Moon girls beat OLSH

The Montour Spartans closed out regular-season play by placing five players in double figures and cruising to a resounding 87-51 victory over Ringgold Monday night in a non-section boys basketball game at Montour.

The one-sided win left Montour with a regular-season record of 21-1 record heading into the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs next week.

The Spartans, who rolled to a Class 5A Section 4 title with a perfect 12-0 mark – believed to be the school’s first perfect section record since 1967-68 – will open the WPIAL tournament at home Tuesday, Feb. 18, against the winner of Thursday’s game between Franklin Regional and Indiana.

Against Ringgold, Montour jumped to a 25-9 lead in the opening quarter and extended that to 47-21 at halftime. The Spartans poured in 28 points in the third quarter before adding 12 in the final eight minutes.

Ama Sow, the Spartans’ standout 6-foot-10 senior, and Colton Straight each scored 21 points for Montour.

Kaleb Platz, AJ Alston and Trey Hopper each added 10 for the Spartans.

Szyair Dungee scored 18 to lead Ringgold.

New Castle 79, Bishop Canevin 45

Kai Cox scored 20 points and the Red Hurricanes, the No. 2 seed among Class 6A schools in the upcoming WPIAL tournament, downed the Class 3A Crusaders in the regular-season finale for both schools.

New Castle, which won the 6A Section 1 title with an 11-3 mark, improved to 19-3 overall. The Red Hurricanes jumped to a 23-10 first-quarter lead and increased that margin to 38-21 at halftime.

Drew Allen scored 17 points to lead Bishop Canevin, which finished the regular season 13-9 overall, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Section 2 play.

The No. 4-seeded Crusaders start WPIAL tournament action Tuesday, Feb. 18, at home against No. 13 Seton LaSalle.


GIRLS: Moon 42, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 23

Jaedin Griggs scored a game-high 23 points and Maria Depner added 15 for the Tigers, who closed out the regular season with a 13-7 record.

Moon opens play in the WPIAL tournament Friday as the No. 10 seed in the Class 5A bracket and will travel to take on No. 7 Indiana at 7 p.m.

OLSH, which went 14-0 to win the Class 3A Section 1 title, is seeded third in its bracket and will host No. 14 South Allegheny at 7 p.m. Friday at Moon Area.

Lola Garner and Leah Parker each scored six points to lead OLSH, which finished the regular season 19-3.


Canon-McMillan 54, Montour 22

Samantha Miller scored 21 points and the host Big Macs rolled to a non-section win in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Canon-McMillan, the No. 4 seed in the Class 6A portion of the WPIAL tournament, led 17-7 after one quarter and put the game away by outscoring Montour 21-2 in the second quarter.

Abby Cleary scored 11 points to lead Montour, which finished its season 8-14 overall.
