A pair of West Hills area teams will look to extend their season-opening win streaks to three games, but they’ll have to do it on the road.
Carlynton will travel to meet South Allegheny at Gladiator Stadium in a 7 p.m. matchup Friday while Cornell heads to Oakmont to play Riverview in a noon kickoff Saturday at Riverside Park.
In other games involving West Hills area schools, Bishop Canevin hosts Steel Valley, Montour travels to meet Trinity, Moon visits Harrison City to battle Penn-Trafford, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart entertains Seton LaSalle at Moon and Sto-Rox visits Brentwood.
All of those games are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.
Both Carlynton and Cornell have won their first two games in convincing fashion.
Carlynton opened its season by beating Carrick, 33-18, and then blanked Avella, 21-0, last week. The Cougars’ opposition for the night – South Allegheny – also is 2-0 as the Gladiators defeated Ringgold 28-14 two weeks ago and demolished Brentwood, 50-7, last week.
Cornell, meanwhile, shut out Brashear, 44-0, in its opener and then whipped California, 27-3, last week at home. The Raiders are ranked No. 5 in Class 1A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Riverview won its season-opener last week against Valley, 38-35.
Bishop Canevin, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A by the Pittsburgh Union Progress, is coming off a 21-14 loss to Seton LaSalle in its season-opener. Steel Valley is 1-1, beating Washington, 28-8, last week after losing to Clairton, 30-7, in Week Zero.
Both Montour and Moon will look to get back in the win column after seeing last week’s head-to-head matchup wiped out in the second quarter by inclement weather.
Montour, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A by both the Post-Gazette and Union Progress, won its season debut against Central Valley and was leading host Moon 13-0 with 8 minutes, 54 seconds left in the second quarter when the game was halted because of lightning concerns. The game was ruled no contest.
Trinity is coming off a 49-6 romp over McGuffey last week; the Hillers lost their opener to Moon, 21-0, two weeks ago.
The Tigers, meanwhile, are ranked No. 5 by the Union Progress in Class 5A. They will play a Penn-Trafford team that is 1-1. The Warriors lost their opener to Norwin, 26-14, before beating Mount Lebanon 28-7.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is 1-1 with a 12-6 win over Rochester and a 41-14 loss last week at the hands of Fort Cherry — ranked No. 1 in Class 1A by both the Post-Gazette and Union Progress.
Sto-Rox will look to get in the win column for the first time this year when it visits Brentwood. The Vikings had their game against Carmichaels last week shortened due to weather issues, and that contest ended in an 8-8 tie. Sto-Rox lost its opener 44-8 to South Side.
Brentwood is 0-2 and has been outscored 90-7 in its first two games.
