Friday Night Lights: Bishop Canevin, Cornell post second straight wins
Brady Wagner went to the air early and often, throwing for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns to pace Bishop Canevin to a 55-7 thrashing of Neshannock Friday night in a WPIAL nonsection football matchup at Fox Chapel’s FXC Burk Stadium.
Wagner found Lamier Wade three times for scores – one from 61 yards out, another from 49 yards out and a third from 38 yards out – in helping the Crusaders improve to 2-0.
Bishop Canevin has outscored its opposition 95-7 in its two starts.
Wade was on the receiving end of eight of Wagner’s 20 completions, good for 219 yards.
Wagner completed 20 of 27 attempts for 379 yards and was intercepted once.
Wagner got the Crusaders’ offense off and running when he scored on a 7-yard run in the opening quarter. He then hit Wade for the first of his three touchdown catches and Malik Davis returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown that made it 21-0.
Wagner and Wade teamed for TD No. 2 with just 5 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, and Neshannock returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for the team’s lone score, leaving Bishop Canevin with a 28-7 lead at the end of one quarter.
The Wagner-Wade duo’s third connection boosted the Crusaders’ lead to 35-7 at halftime, and Bishop Canevin added two third-quarter scores when Wagner hit Aaron Scott on a 7-yard TD pass and Dennis Jackson ran in from 14 yards out.
Michael Hager’s 7-yard touchdown run finished the scoring in the fourth quarter for the winners.
Bishop Canevin’s leading rusher, Neuval Bone III, had 31 yards on five carries.
Cornell 21, Leechburg 9
Jeremiah Dent ran for two touchdowns and the Raiders used two fourth-quarter touchdowns to erase a two-point deficit and beat the Blue Devils for their second straight win to the start the season.
Dent’s 16-yard touchdown run and Drake Barr’s PAT gave Cornell a 7-0 halftime lead.
Leechburg put nine points on the board in the third quarter to go up 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter, but Chris Ford’s 22-yard touchdown run and a Daveon Collier’s two-point conversion pass to ID Anderson vaulted Cornell into a 15-9 lead.
Dent then tacked on a 12-yard touchdown run to lock up the win for Cornell.
Dent rushed for 114 yards on 10 carries while Collier added 73 yards on 12 attempts. Collier also completed 6 of 12 passes for 108 yards.
Belle Vernon 35, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0
Chace Petrosky ran for two touchdowns and the Leopards broke open a close game with 28 second-half points on the way to a nonsection win over the Chargers at Quaker Valley High School's Chuck Knox Stadium.
David Bergstedt’s 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter accounted for the only points in the first half, but a 2-yard TD run by Jace Gedekoh and Petrosky’s 6-yard scoring run left the Leopards in front, 19-0, after three quarters.
Petrosky added a 27-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter and Gedekoh connected with Vander Raczkowski on a 4-yard touchdown pass later in the final quarter to close out the scoring.
The Leopards outgained OLSH 269-183, with 174 of that coming on the ground. Petrosky rushed for 71 yards on 14 carries for the winners. The Chargers rushed for 90 yards on 25 attempts, with J.J. Hayden leading the way with 46 yards on seven attempts. Hayden also completed 10 of 16 passes for 93 yards and was intercepted twice for the Chargers, who fell to 0-2.
Charleroi 47, Carlynton 12
The host Cougars dominated play in the middle two quarters and that proved to be the difference in a win over the visiting Cougars.
Charleroi led just 7-6 after one quarter, with Carlynton scoring on Justin Williams’ 76-yard kickoff return that followed Elijah Allah’s 4-yard run for Charleroi.
But Charleroi outscored the visitors 18-0 in the second quarter and 8-0 in the third quarter to lead 33-6 heading into the final quarter.
Carlynton’s second and final touchdown came on Maddox Horrell’s 53-yard pass to Jaesean Nembhard.
Horrell completed 11 of 26 passes for 147 yards for Carlynton, which fell to 1-1, but was intercepted four times.
Allah rushed 25 times for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Sto-Rox 36, Rochester 28
Karic Willis rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown and caught a 40-yard scoring pass from Zaahkir Cox to help the Vikings even their record at 1-1.
Ramir Valentino added 102 yards rushing on 15 attempts as Sto-Rox rolled up 320 yards on the ground in 39 attempts.
Cox added to the ground attack by rushing for 95 yards in 10 carries and also returned an interception for a touchdown to go with his TD throw to Willis.
Raymond Mason also had an interception for Sto-Rox.
