Kya Cooley connected on five 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 21 points, sparking Bishop Canevin to a 53-26 victory over visiting Mapletown Monday night in a WPIAL Class 1A Section 2 girls basketball game.
Isabella Sysak added 14 points for the Crusaders, who improved to 3-3 in section play and 8-4 overall.
Bishop Canevin built a 17-10 first-quarter lead and then held the Maples to two second-quarter points on the way to a 26-12 halftime lead.
Crusaders coach Rob Travis said it took a while for his team to get untracked.
“After a slow first quarter, we locked in on the defensive end,” he said.
Alexis Summers contributed eight points for Bishop Canevin. Helena Compton and Treslee Weston each scored six points to lead Mapletown.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 61, Mohawk 13
Claudia Ierullo scored 19 points for the Chargers, who bolted to a 27-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Camryn Hummel added 12 points for OLSH, which moved to 7-0 in Class 3A Section 1 play and 12-2 overall.
Reagan Magno and Gigi Pezzuolo each scored four points for Mohawk.
Burgettstown 43, Carlynton 23
Jocelyn Griffin scored 10 points for the Cougars, but it wasn’t nearly enough to neutralize the Blue Devils in a Class 2A Section 2 game at Carlynton.
Burgettstown led 13-6 after one quarter and 22-10 at halftime. The Cougars outscored the Blue Devils 8-5 in the third quarter but Burgettstown went on a 17-5 spree in the final quarter.
The loss left Carlynton 1-3 in section play and 5-7 overall.
Beaver Falls 55, Sto-Rox 24
The Vikings trailed by just six at halftime, 17-11, but the Tigers came out smoking in the third quarter, erupting for 33 points to Sto-Rox’s eight on the way to a one-sided win in a Class 3A Section 1 game.
Taylor Pullen scored 20 points to lead Beaver Falls and Dreaven Haskins added 16, and each of them scored 11 points in the pivotal third quarter.
Kamiyah Thompson scored eight points for Sto-Rox, which fell to 1-5 in section play and 6-7 overall with the loss.
