Girls basketball: Carlynton claims tournament win; Moon, Bishop Canevin fall

Lucy Vetter scored a game-high 11 points to spark the Carlynton girls basketball team to a 36-20 romp over East Allegheny Friday night in the first night of the Carlynton Cougars Boys and Girls Tipoff Classic.

The Cougars got the jump on the visitors, rolling up 20 first-quarter points to just eight for East Allegheny. Carlynton held the Wildcats scoreless in the second quarter to widen its lead to 24-8 at halftime. East Allegheny never threatened from that point on.

Carlee Hughes chipped in with 10 points for Carlynton, which evened its record at 1-1 on the season.

The Cougars will take on Southmoreland at 5 p.m. Saturday in the girls tournament championship game. Southmoreland whipped Propel Braddock Hills, 48-31, in the tournament’s opening game Friday.

Canon-McMillan 37, Moon 36

Madison Clair scored 15 points and the Big Macs parlayed an eight-point halftime lead into a one-point win over the host Tigers in the Moon Girls Tipoff Tournament.

Canon-McMillan jumped to a 22-14 lead after two quarters, but the Tigers – who were led by Jaedin Griggs’ 18 points – trimmed the lead to five at 28-23 heading into the final quarter.

Moon coach Mark Pompeo called it a game of missed opportunities on both sides.

“They beat us in the first half 22-14 and we outscored them the second half 22-15,” he said. “We were 54% from the line, they were 42% from the line.

“It came down to the end and the ball just bounced their way. Lots of great lessons for both teams.”

Maria Depner contributed 10 points for Moon, which came up just short in its season-opener. Izabella Bobitski also scored 10 points for the Big Macs.

Moon will take on Lincoln Park at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the second day of the two-day tournament.

Beaver 62, Bishop Canevin 32

Annsley Baker and Ava Wright combined for 37 points to help the Bobcats hand the visiting Crusaders their first loss of the season in three starts.

Beaver built an 18-10 first quarter lead that was extended to 32-22 at halftime. Bishop Canevin pulled to within six points at one point, but the Bobcats began to take control of the boards, and they used superior depth to pull away.

Kya Cooley scored 13 points to pace the Crusaders and Isabella Sysak contributed 10.
