Claudia Ierullo scored a game-high 21 points and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart held Quaker Valley’s Mimi Thiero in check to claim a 62-25 victory over the Quakers Thursday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball game at Quaker Valley.
The Chargers hit a season-high 10 3-pointers to overcome a slow start and improve to 15-2 overall and a perfect 10-0 in section play. Seven different players each hit at least one 3-pointer for OLSH.
Quaker Valley took an 11-6 lead after one quarter, but OLSH got going in the second quarter, outscoring the Quakers 16-5 to take a 22-16 lead at halftime.
Four different players hit 3-pointers in that second quarter for the Chargers.
OLSH then took complete charge of the game in the third quarter, pouring in 25 points to the host team’s seven to put the contest away.
Ierullo scored 11 of her 21 points in the third quarter and added six in the fourth quarter.
Thiero, Quaker Valley’s standout 6-foot-5 junior who had been averaging more than 21 points per game, was limited to 13 by the Chargers.
OLSH coach Don Eckerle saluted the play of Sara Daeschner, who drew the assignment to guard Thiero the entire game.
Lola Garner added 12 points for OLSH. Quaker Valley fell to 8-8 overall and 6-4 with the loss.
Fort Cherry 67, Carlynton 22
Carlee Hughes scored nine points to lead the Cougars, but it wasn’t nearly enough as they dropped a Class 2A Section 2 decision to the first-place Rangers.
Carlynton trailed just 14-6 after one quarter, but Fort Cherry erupted for 22 points in the second quarter to extend its lead to 36-12 at halftime. The Rangers then put the game away by outscoring the Cougars 19-4 in the third quarter.
The loss left Carlynton 7-8 overall and 1-4 in section play. Fort Cherry improved to 6-0 in the section and 14-2 overall.
Mohawk 49, Sto-Rox 24
The Warriors jumped out to a 14-0 lead over the Vikings after one quarter and that proved to be the difference in the Class 3A Section 1 matchup.
Reagan Magno scored 21 points to lead Mohawk, which beat Sto-Rox by just two points – 39-37 – in the first game between the two teams on Dec. 19.
Kamiyah Thompson totaled 13 points to pace Sto-Rox, which dropped to 6-10 overall and 1-8 in section play.
Geibel Catholic 67, Bishop Canevin 47
Emma Larkin poured in 33 points and two other Gators combined for 30 more on the way to a win over the Crusaders in a Class 1A Section 2 game at Bishop Canevin.
Geibel jumped to a 17-7 lead after one quarter and owned a 29-16 advantage at halftime. Bishop Canevin, which fell to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in section play, came alive offensively in the second half, scoring 31 points, but it was too little, too late.
Kya Cooley led Bishop Canevin with 16 points and Isabella Sysak finished with 14.
Mallory Clemmer contributed 17 points for Geibel, which improved to 16-1 overall and 9-1 in the section, and Ava Henderson added 13.
BOYS: Obama Academy 58, Sto-Rox 40
Naron Jackson scored 22 points and the Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Vikings in a non-section game.
Sto-Rox trailed 28-23 at halftime and was still in the game after three quarters, as Obama held an eight-point lead. But the Eagles took control down the stretch to win going away.
Marcus Griffin scored 15 points to lead the Vikings, who fell to 2-12 overall, while LJ Washington and MJ Thomas each added eight.
