High school swimming: Carlynton girls claim first section win; Moon sweeps Mars

Evey Fahnestock captured two individual first-place finishes and helped her team post a pair of relay victories as Carlynton’s girls swim team claimed its first dual meet win of the season Thursday, 73-63, over the Ellis School at Carlynton.

It was the first Class 2A Section 1 victory of the season for the Cougars. Ellis did not field a boys team so the Carlynton boys swam for fun, coach Kevin MacMurdo said.

In the girls meet, Fahnestock won the 500-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, and also took part in victorious 400 free relay and 200 free relay efforts.

Also competing on both winning relay efforts were Chloe Baum, Allie Glass and Mallory Rose.

In addition to their relay duties, Baum won the 50 free, Glass took first in the 100 backstroke and Rose tied for first in the 200 free.

Cate Hites also was an individual event winner for the Cougars, as she took first in the 100 butterfly.

Sarah Loney, meanwhile, placed second in two events – the 500 free and the 100 fly.


Moon Area vs. Mars

The Tigers boys team used five individual event winners and superior depth to post a 95-77 victory over the Fightin’ Planets.

On the girls side, Mars made it a bit closer, but Moon still prevailed, 97-85.

Earning victories for the Tigers in the boys meet were DJ McGill, Isaac Tennant, Chris Bailey, Ryan Slawuta, and Daniel Sirbu, and Sirbu was named the top swimmer in the meet by Moon coach Jeff Berghoff.

In the girls meet, Madison Puthoff, Mimi Munnell, Addi Munnell and Anya Muralidharan captured individual victories, and Berghoff named Muralidharan the meet’s top female performer.

Cornell vs. Chartiers Valley

The Raiders fell to the Colts in both the boys and girls meets, with Chartiers Valley posting an 86-65 win in the girls meet and the Colts prevailing 76-52 in the boys meet.

On the girls side, Mimi Chamberlain, Gianna Mosca and Kendra Durec each claimed one individual first-place finish and teamed with Mira Mosca to win the 400 freestyle relay with a WPIAL cut time of 4 minutes, 8.37 seconds.

Chamberlain also won the 200 freestyle, Gianna Mosca took the 50 free and Durec won the 100 breaststroke. Grace Turko also was an individual event winner; she took first in the 100 freestyle.

On the boys side, Noah Pickett placed first in two events – the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke while Davis Gray and Sam Bleakley each won one individual event. Gray won the 50 free and Bleakley the 100 breaststroke.

Gray also swam on the Raiders’ victorious 200 free relay quartet with Petrus Hawkins, Mataya Hale and Caleb King.


Montour vs. Canon-McMillan

The Spartans went 0-for-2 against the Big Macs, falling 86-65 in the boys meet and 99-58 in the girls meet. No other information was available.
