High school boys golf: OLSH’s Schollaert off to red-hot start

With the start of the high school sports season here, some players and teams have nowhere to go but up.

It’s hard to put Jonah Schollaert in that category.

Schollaert, a senior at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, finished tied for second at last year’s PIAA Class 2A individual golf championships, carding an impressive 4-under-par two-round total of 140 on Penn State’s blue course.

Which means there’s only one spot he can climb.

Schollaert will have plenty of chances to hone his skills before the 2025 state championships, and he’s already off to a hot start.

In the Chargers’ third Class 2A Section 4 match Tuesday against Fort Cherry at Quicksilver Golf Club, Schollaert shot 3-under-par 33 to collect medalist honors in leading coach Ron Lucas’ team to a 223-230 victory over Fort Cherry in a Class AA Section 4 match at Quicksilver Golf Club.

In OLSH’s opening match of the season on Aug. 11, Schollaert shot a 2-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors and pace the Chargers to a 211-226 win over Avella at Indian Run Golf Club.

In the Chargers’ second match Friday, Aug. 15, Schollaert finished at 1-over 37 to tie Keystone Oaks’ Finn Tiernan for medalist honors and lead OLH to a 208-232 win.

Schollaert has had plenty of help from his friends in the first three matches. In Tuesday’s victory over Fort Cherry, sophomore Matthew Prince finished with a 44, one stroke ahead of junior Katie Suess and three strokes in front of junior Ryan DeNinno. Freshman Nolan Meyer rounded out the scoring for OLSH with a round of 54.

In the season opener, Prince shot 40 to solidify his spot as the team’s No. 2 golfer. DeNinno came in at 45, followed by Suess at 44 and junior Hunter Chimenti at 48.

Prince followed that Friday with another 40 while DeNinno shot 42, Suess 43 and Meyer 46.

Lucas spoke highly of Schollaert, saying that he’s dedicated to practicing regularly and plays in many local events to gain experience.

“I’ve witnessed him in other junior golf events since he was 7 years old,” Lucas said of Schollaert.

He complimented the player on his pace of play. “He looks at the range finder, then commits to the tee shot, approach shot or putt,” he said.

“He expects to play every round under-par.”

Moon Area 191, Blackhawk 210

Ian Bonidie shot 36 at Montour Heights Country Club Wednesday to spark the Tigers to their second section victory in two starts.

Bonidie claimed medalist honors, finishing one stroke ahead of teammate Matthew Koch and Blackhawk’s Alex Thompson.

Rounding out the scoring for Moon were Patrick Queen (38), David Gallup (39) and Chris Brown (41).
