Bishop Canevin used a big first half to build a 17-point lead and then held off scrappy Sto-Rox in the final minutes to claim an 86-76 victory Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball game at Sto-Rox.
Drew Allen scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the first two quarters for the Crusaders, who led 48-31 at halftime.
Sto-Rox, led by LJ Washington’s 24 points, battled back and pulled to within four points at 78-74 with 2 minutes, 37 seconds left.
But Bishop Canevin took advantage of a couple of subpar Sto-Rox possessions and stabilized things, building the lead back up to 10 at 84-74 with 55 seconds remaining, and that was the ballgame.
Bishop Canevin coach Tim Tyree said his team ran into some turnover issues in the second half, which contributed to the Sto-Rox comeback.
“We need to understand time and score,” he said. “A lot of the turnovers in the second half were because we were rushing.
“As we continue to build, we will work on situational things. We’ll take the win and continue to get better.”
Sto-Rox coach Ryan Hughes said if his team had played the first half the way it played the second, “it would have been a different result.”
“We didn’t show the toughness we needed in the first half,” Hughes said. “We couldn’t get a stop. We had to show some grit in the second half and we did.”
Damar Olds added 21 points for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 9-6 overall and 5-0 in the section. Raukeem Hawkins contributed 14 points for the winners.
Sto-Rox, now 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the section, had four players in double figures. In addition to Washington’s 24 points, Marcus Griffin added 15, MJ Thomas 14 and Delaun Harris 12 for the Vikings.
