Irelynn Hobbs lit up the scoreboard for three goals Monday, sparking Montour to a 5-0 victory over Blackhawk in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 match at Thomas J. Birko Memorial Stadium.
The victory enabled the Spartans to nail down a berth in the WPIAL playoffs and it left Montour with an overall record of 8-2 and 7-1 in section play.
Hobbs scored two of her three goals in the first half, and Joslin Heckathorne added one to give Montour a 3-0 lead at halftime
Hobbs and McKenzie Hall each added one second-half goal for the Spartans.
Moon Area 6, Bethel Park 0
Kendall Dydek scored two goals and assisted on one as the Tigers continued their dominance in Class 3A Section 2 play by blanking the Black Hawks.
Goals by Dydek and Emma Jones gave Moon a 2-0 halftime lead.
Quinn Arnold, Junie Shaver and Hailey Hatton each contributed one goal for Moon, which improved to 11-1-0 overall and 9-0-0 in section play.
Emma Marquis, Taylor McConnell, Riley LaFayette and Arnold each chipped in with assists. Goalkeepers Ainslie Romasco and Samantha D’Alesio combined on the shutout.
Moon has now outscored its opposition 56-6 overall and 49-2 in section play. The Tigers have seven shutouts this season.
Carlynton 3, Freedom Area 2
Riley Mauro converted a long pass from Sophia O’Brien to score what proved to be the game-winning goal 13 minutes into the second half as the visiting Cougars downed the Bulldogs in a nonsection match.
Freedom took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game but Carlynton tied the score when Bella D’Antonio converted a penalty kick opportunity after Gigi Choate was tripped in the box. The Bulldogs went back on top 12 minutes later, 2-1, but the Cougars again pulled even 12 minutes after that when Mary Crawford found a loose ball in the box and scored.
That set the stage for Mauro’s game-winner in the second half. Carlynton improved to 6-4-1 overall.
Bishop Canevin 1, South Allegheny 0
Cali Evans scored a goal 15 minutes into the second half, and that’s all the Crusaders needed to top the Gladiators in a Class 1A Section 3 match at Bishop Canevin.
Cate Hites earned the shutout in goal for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 2-6 overall and in section play with the win.
Eden Christian Academy 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 2
The Warriors led 2-0 at halftime and 3-0 early in the second half before the Chargers staged a rally that came up a goal short in this Class 1A Section 1 match at Eden Christian.
Olivia Chimenti and Keely Bodnar each scored one goal in the second half for OLSH, but the Chargers could not find the equalizer.
The loss left the Chargers 4-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in section play.
BOYS GOLF
WPIAL Tournaments
Moon Area senior Chris Brown shot an 84 Monday in the final round of the WPIAL Class 3A golf tournament at Butler Country Club and failed to qualify for the PIAA tournament.
Brown’s 84 left him with an overall total of 161, good for 33rd among 36 golfers who competed in the event.
Carson Kinsley of Fox Chapel took home medalist honors with a two-round total of 134 while Greater Latrobe’s Jack Sacriponte was second at 140 and Nico Ward of West Allegheny third at 142.
The top 14 finishers advance to the PIAA tournament, which will be held Oct. 20 at Penn State Golf Course.
The WPIAL Class 2A tournament will conclude today at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray with Our Lady of the Sacred Heart senior Jonah Schollart leading by two strokes over Greensburg Salem’s Luke Sikora.
Schollaert shot a 2-under-par 70 in the opening round.
Also competing today will be Jamin Brock of Bishop Canevin, who posted an opening-round score of 79 last week.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Avella 3, Cornell 1
The Raiders averted the shutout by taking the third set, 25-23, but the host Eagles prevailed b winning 25-15, 25-18, 25-11 in a nonsection match. No further details were available.
