Two West Hills area schools passed their opening-round tests Monday in the WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer tournament.
No. 5 seed Moon opened play by blanking Hampton, 4-0, at Tiger Stadium, while No. 8 seed Montour needed extra time to edge Franklin Regional, 3-2.
The Tigers, who scored all four of their goals in the opening half, advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday against Plum, which beat Shaler, 4-0, Monday.
The location and time of Thursday’s game will be announced later.
Moon, which tied for the Section 2 championship with West Allegheny this year, improved to 13-3 overall.
The Tigers reached last year’s Class 3A title game before losing.
Montour, meanwhile, raised its record to 12-5-2 by squeezing past Franklin Regional.
With the win, the Spartans will take on top-seeded Fox Chapel, an 8-0 winner over No. 16 seed Indiana. The match will be played Thursday, and the location and time will be announced later.
In Montour’s first-round game, Franklin Regional scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Spartans pulled even when Kira Hobbs scored her first goal of the season off an assist from her sister, Irelynn Hobbs.
Kira Hobbs put Montour in front 2-1 before Franklin Regional tied it at 2-2.
Irelynn Hobbs then gave the Spartans the win in overtime, converting a through ball from Grace Bannon for the game-winning goal.
