High school roundup: Montour downs Ambridge at PBC Hall of Fame basketball classic; Moon wrestlers place 2nd

Loic Kalau made his presence felt inside in a big way Saturday, helping to fuel Montour to a 54-29 victory over Ambridge at the PBC Hall of Fame Boys Basketball Classic at Montour.

Kalau, Montour’s 7-foot-1 senior center, scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked six shots to help the Spartans win for the second straight day.

Ambridge, led by Shaq West’s 15 points, hung tough with the host Spartans through most of the first two quarters but still trailed 28-15 at halftime.

Montour then used a 22-6 third-quarter spurt to put the game away.

Zane Schachter scored 14 points and had six assists for Montour, which improved to 6-12 with the win.


Hopewell 62, Sto-Rox 47

Sto-Rox battled back from a seven-point first-quarter deficit and trailed by just one point, 39-38, heading into the final quarter, but Hopewell used a 23-9 advantage over the last eight minutes to claim the win in the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills.

James Armstrong scored 25 points to lead Hopewell while Justin Shegog totaled 16 and Brody Rock added 11.

Saturday marked Hopewell’s second victory over Sto-Rox in six-day stretch.

Marcus Griffin scored 12 points to lead Sto-Rox, which fell to 6-11.


Ellwood City 60, Carlynton 32

Kaleb Servick scored 21 points and Aaron Lake added 18 to help the Wolverines down the Cougars in the PBC Hall of Fame Classic at North Hills Middle School.

Ellwood City led by seven after one quarter but took control in the next two quarters, outscoring Carlynton 33-13 to put the game away.

Ishaga Barre scored 10 points to lead the Cougars, who fell to 5-13 overall.


WRESTLING

Fred Bell Tournament

Moon Area placed three wrestlers in the championship finals to finish second among 39 teams competing Saturday at Grove City High School.

Cael Yanek (133 pounds), Zachary Regotti (145) and Liam Costa (172) all reached the finals but came up short. Yanek fell 4-2 to Erik Carlile of Penns Valley, Regotti lost 4-1 to Emmett Wolfe of McGuffey and Costa was defeated by Cash Morrell of Cochranton, 10-4.

Moon’s Michael Olszewski wound up third at 189, Hayden Seymour finished fourth at 114, Bryce Thomas placed sixth at 107 and Karsten Kirchner finished eighth at 121.


Frank Ferguson Brooke (W. Va.) Classic

Montour, getting a third-place finish from Jacob Chacon at 144 pounds, finished ninth among 12 teams in Saturday’s event, held at Brooke High School in Wellsburg, W. Va.

Chacon won by technical fall over Demeatrius Benjamin of Steubenville, 17-1, to take home third place.

The Spartans’ Kristen Walzer (106) and Jacob Halbedl (285) both lost their third-place matches, with Walzer falling by major decision to Monte Guntrum of Steubenville, 12-0, and Halbedl getting decisioned by Beau Hudson of Steubenville, 5-0.

Montour’s Damon Nelson (120) and Lucus Jenkins (215) wound up sixth, Jackson Kraemer (165) finished seventh and Paker Sedlock (113) and Reese Lugaila (126) both placed eighth.

Dom Cisnero Torres of Carlynton finished third in the 190-pound weight class, rebounding for a loss in the championship semifinals to win two straight matches, including a pin of Braylon Hayden of Steubenville at 4:21 in the battle for third place.
