Löic Kalau scored a game-high 20 points and Montour used a huge first-quarter advantage to set the pace en route to a 69-36 victory over Blackhawk Friday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 boys basketball contest at Blackhawk.
Montour, now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in section play, sprinted to a 23-2 first-quarter lead and after Blackhawk trimmed the deficit to 36-19 at halftime, the Spartans put the game out of reach by outscoring the Cougars 18-7 in the third quarter to lead 54-26 heading into the final eight minutes.
Brandon Bennett contributed 18 points for Montour and Rob Schmitt added 13.
Marco Fusetti led Blackhawk with 18 points.
Bishop Canevin 94, Washington 64
Jackson Maddix erupted for 32 points to lead four players in double figures as the Crusaders whipped the Prexies in a Class 3A Section 2 matchup.
Maddix scored 12 points in a high-scoring first quarter as Bishop Canevin built a 27-24 lead. The game remained tight at the half, with the Crusaders leading 45-40. Bishop Canevin then scored 26 points in the third quarter, with Maddix accounting for 10, and used a 23-8 fourth-quarter advantage to put the game away.
Raukeem Hawkins scored 18 points and Drew Allen 14 for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in section play.
Vincent Jackson paced Washington with 20 points.
Chartiers Valley 46, Moon Area 43
The defending WPIAL Class 5A champs built a 17-point halftime lead and then held on to beat the Tigers in a Section 4 matchup at Chartiers Valley.
Chartiers Valley led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter and 33-16 at halftime before the Tigers rallied, outscoring the Colts by 10 in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 39-32 heading into the final quarter.
But Chartiers Valley managed to hang on for the win to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in section play. Moon fell to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in section play.
Brody Bauman paced Moon with 11 points and Jackson Bauman added 10. Julian Semplice and Luca Federico each scored 16 to lead Chartiers Valley.
Carlynton 48, McGuffey 44
Dewayne Fisher scored 12 points, including five in the fourth quarter to spark the Cougars to a Class 3A Section 2 victory over the visiting Highlanders.
Carlynton led by 10 with a little under seven minutes to play, 39-29, but McGuffey whittled away at the lead and pulled to within a point a point at 43-42 with 1 minute, 43 seconds to play.
The Cougars converted a 3-point shot with 1:25 left to make it 46-42, but McGuffey answered with a basket to make it 46-44 with 1:12 to play.
Carlynton had a chance to put the game away at the free throw line but failed to convert on several opportunities. But McGuffey could not capitalize on those chances and the Cougars held on for the win to improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in section play.
Maurice Segnonou added 10 points for Carlynton, with eight coming in the first half. Sam Stout led McGuffey with 15 points.
Cornell 61, Beaver County Christian 30
Eduardo Benitez outscored the Eagles single-handedly, pouring in 33 points to help the Raiders to an easy win in a Class 1A Section 1 game at Beaver Falls.
The two teams battled on even terms for the first quarter, but the Raiders outscored the host team 30-11 in the middle two quarters and added on to its lead in the final eight minutes.
Terrance Collington added 14 points for Cornell, which improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in section play.
Keystone Oaks 45, Sto-Rox 40
Isaac Russell scored 12 points and Carmen Pallarin added nine to help the Eagles subdue the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 2 matchup at Keystone Oaks.
The game was tight throughout; the teams were deadlocked 19-19 at halftime and 33-33 heading into the final eight minutes.
But Russell scored seven of his 12 points in the last quarter to help Keystone Oaks outscore the Vikings 12-7 and take home the win.
Lamarr Washington led Sto-Rox with 13 points. The Vikings fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in section play with the loss.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Chartiers Valley 36, Moon Area 23
The Colts used a big second quarter to build an 11-point halftime lead, and that proved to be enough as they went on to top the Tigers in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Chartiers Valley.
Alyssa Davis led Chartiers Valley’s balanced attack with nine points. Maria Depner’s nine points paced Moon, which fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in section play.
The Tigers return to action Monday, Dec. 22, against defending state champion South Fayette.
