Damien Holloway and Devonte Dean combined for 31 first-half points as host Carlynton opened up a big early lead and romped past Sto-Rox, 75-49, Friday in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 boys basketball game.
Dean finished with 24 points, 13 of which came in the first half as Carlynton followed up a 21-point first quarter with 28 points in the second to take a 49-22 lead at intermission. Dean had 11 points in the second quarter alone.
The Cougars used a stifling press to force a number of Sto-Rox turnovers that ended up in easy baskets.
Holloway scored 18 of his 23 points in the opening half, including 12 in the second quarter.
Mikey Jenkins finished with 12 points for Carlynton, which improved to 1-1 in the section and 5-5 overall.
Marcus Griffin and Javon Nelson each scored 12 points to lead Sto-Rox, which dropped to 0-2 in section play and 2-6 overall. MJ Thomas added 10 points for the Vikings, all of which came in the third quarter.
Moon Area 79, Blackhawk 36
Michael Santicola scored all 21 of his points in the first half as the Tigers built a huge lead early and cruised past the Cougars in a Class 5A Section 4 contest.
Santicola and Carter Tumulty teamed for 35 first-half points as Moon jumped to a 45-26 lead at intermission. The Tigers scored 30 points in the first quarter and held Blackhawk to just nine.
Tumulty scored 14 points in the opening 16 minutes on his way to 19 for the game.
Amir Turner contributed 11 points for Moon, which improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the section. AJ Buford added 10 points for the winners.
Justin Shamir paced Blackhawk (3-8, 0-4) with 13 points.
Bishop Canevin 60, McGuffey 44
Raukeem Hawkins scored 17 points and the Crusaders used a big third quarter to pull away and beat the Highlanders in a Class 3A Section 2 game.
Drew Allen scored eight of his 10 points in the first half as Bishop Canevin built a 30-23 lead. Hawkins then chipped in with eight of his points in the third quarter, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, as the Crusaders outscored McGuffey 17-8 to take a 47-31 lead heading into the final quarter.
Eddie Benton finished with 10 points while Lamier Wade and Jackson Maddix each added nine for Bishop Canevin, which improved to 2-0 in the section and 3-7 overall.
Crusaders coach Aaron McGee liked what he saw of his team’s effort Friday.
“We did a good job of pressuring the ball and defending,” he said afterward. “And we finally made some shots.”
Aidan Cunningham scored 14 points to pace McGuffey, which lost for just the third time in 11 starts and fell to 1-1 in the section.
Aquinas Academy 64, Cornell 20
Sam Duer and Jake Guillen combined for 35 points to help the Crusaders cruise past the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 game.
Duer finished with 18 points and Guillen 17 for Aquinas Academy, which improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the section. The Crusaders outscored Cornell 28-4 in the first quarter and led 38-11 at halftime before holding the Raiders to one third-quarter point.
Walter Clarit scored 10 points to lead Cornell, which fell to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the section.
Postponements
Both the Montour-Mars boys and girls games, scheduled to be played at Mars, were postponed Friday night due to inclement weather. Also postponed Friday night was the Western Beaver vs. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart boys matchup, which was scheduled to be played at Cornell.
