Both West Hills girls soccer teams posted victories Monday in their opening-round matches in the WPIAL Class 3A tournament.
Moon Area opened tournament play in much the same manner as it has most of the season – with a shutout victory. This time, the third-seeded Tigers blanked Oakland Catholic, 3-0, at Tiger Stadium.
And No. 7 seed Montour also held its opponent scoreless, claiming a 1-0 victory over 10th-seeded Hampton.
Moon got a pair of goals from Julie Shaver and one from Kendall Dydek in collecting its 17th victory in 18 games this season.
Dydek also assisted on a goal while Quinn Arnold and Anna Palm also picked up assists.
Ainslie Romasco earned the shutout in goal for the section champion Tigers, who led 1-0 at halftime when Dydek scored 20 minutes into the half.
Moon has now outscored its opponents 76-7 this season and has posted 12 shutouts. The Tigers have given up just one goal in its last seven games combined. That came in a 4-1 win over Shaler on Oct. 11.
Montour and Hampton battled in scoreless fashion through regulation and the first overtime before Kaci Mitcheltree won the game for the Spartans on a goal with 4 minutes, 19 seconds remaining in the second period.
Ava Domenico assisted on the goal for Montour, which improved to 12-4.
Moon will take on Shaler in a quarterfinal round game Thursday at a place and time to be determined. Shaler, the No. 11 seed, downed sixth-seeded Franklin Regional at Franklin Regional Monday night in a game that went to penalty kicks after 100 scoreless minutes of play.
Montour will move on to play second-seeded South Fayette Thursday at a place and time to be determined.
The second-seeded Lions blanked Elizabeth Forward, 5-0, Monday.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
South Allegheny 3, Carlynton 0
The Gladiators posted their first-ever postseason volleyball victory by blanking the 19th-seeded Cougars in a Class 2A tournament match played at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-14.
With the win, No. 13 seed South Allegheny moves on to play OLSH in a first-round match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at OLSH.
The Chargers are seeded No. 4 in the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 13-3 overall record and a 12-2 record in Section 1.
