High school wrestling: Moon’s Smarsh places fourth at Women of Ironman tournament

Moon Area’s Haley Smarsh placed fourth at 130 pounds at the Women of Ironman Wrestling Tournament, which concluded Sunday at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Smarsh, a two-time defending WPIAL champion, won her first two matches by fall, including a pin of Canon-McMillain’s Zoey Gogos in just 24 seconds, but lost a major decision (14-6) to Willow White of South Dade High School in the quarterfinals.

Smarsh rebounded to power her way through the consolation bracket, recording three straight victories by fall, with the first one coming over Paige Cowan of East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1:58 and the next coming over Shannon Logue of Bishop Shanahan High School in 4:36.

In the consolation semifinal match, Smarsh stopped Sophia Slaghter of Orange County High School in 2:33.

That vaulted her into the third-place match, where she was pinned by Lacie Knick of Olentangy Orange in 55 seconds.
