Delaney Dzurenda compiled 14 kills, four digs and two aces to spark Montour to a 3-1 victory over Moon Area Tuesday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 volleyball match at Moon.

Amorah Slade contributed 27 digs, two aces and eight assists while Phoebe Stacho had 12 assists, one ace and five digs for Montour, which improved to 2-2.

Ary Camardese chipped in with nine assists, three aces and six digs while Alina Vlasach had six kills, three blocks and two digs. Also for Montour, Lily Woessner finished with five kills and two blocks while Devlynn Wolbert had nine digs.

Gabby Bitsura led Moon with 21 assists and five digs while Caroline Diana had nine kills and four digs and Isabella Hamilton finished with six kills.

Fort Cherry 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 2

The Chargers dropped a close match to the top-ranked Rangers, losing 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12 in a hard-fought Class 2A Section 3 contest at the Angela Activities Center.

Macie Trombetta registered 15 kills for OLSH while Frankie Schlatterer had 11 kills and seven blocks.

Also contributing to the Chargers’ cause were Sophia Wasko with 18 digs and four aces, Carmella Rippole with 22 assists and three aces and Isabell Rodgers with 15 assists.

Bishop Canevin 3, Union 2

The Crusaders rallied from being down 2-1 to edge the Scotties in a Class 1A Section 1 match.

Bishop Canevin won by set scores of 25-18, 15-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12.

The Crusaders improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the section with the win.

Rochester 3, Cornell 0

The Rams swept the Raiders in a Class 1A Section 1 match. Cornell fell to 3-6 overall and 0-5 in section play with the loss.

GOLF

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Matthew Prince and Moon Area’s Liv DeGori both made the qualifying grade in their respective tournaments Tuesday to advance to next week’s WPIAL Individual Championships.

Prince shot 80 at the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Section Qualifying Tournament at Shannopin Country Club to advance while DeGori carded a 76 in Class 3A Section 2 girls event at Quicksilver Golf Club to move on in earn a berth in next week’s Individual Championships.

The Class 2A boys championship event will start Tuesday, Sept. 29, at South Hills Country Club and conclude Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Oakmont Country Club. The Class 3A girls event will begin Monday, Sept. 28, at Hillcrest Country Club and conclude Monday, Oct. 5, at Valleybrook Country Club.

Prince finished one shot under the target score of 81 to advance. Other Chargers players who participated Tuesday but did not advance were Wyatt Walsh (86), Nolan Meyer (90), Garrett Carlowski (91) and Ryan DeNinno (93).

DeGori, who played in last year’s PIAA tournament, easily beat the target score of 90 to advance.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Eva Crofford topped all runners in the field at the Division II Section 2 girls meet at Youthtowne, leading the Chargers to a team title.

Crofford finished in 19 minutes, 54 seconds. Jules Goshen of OLSH finished fourth in 20:10, followed by Ellie Green, who placed seventh in 20:53, and Lindsay Bressler, who finished 10^th in 21:24.

BOYS SOCCER

Montour 2, Blackhawk 1

Mario Passaro converted a penalty kick with 12 minutes remaining in the game to lift the Spartans past the Cougars in a Class 3A Section 4 game.

Nick Bates put Blackhawk out in front 1-0 11 minutes into the game, but Rave Mamujonov pulled Montour even with 21 minutes left in the half.

The game remained tied until Passaro’s deciding penalty kick.

Liam Hovanic stopped one shot in goal for Montour, which improved to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the section.
