Irelynn Hobbs scored a pair of goals, and that proved to be the difference as Montour posted a 3-1 victory over Moon Area Monday night in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 girls soccer game at the AHN Montour Sports Complex.

Kaci Mitcheltree gave Montour a 1-0 lead just 10 seconds into the game, and Mitcheltree later assisted on one of Hobbs’ goals.

Hobbs increased her goal total on the season to 21 as Montour improved to 7-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in section play.

Emma Jones scored for Moon, which dropped to 3-3-1 overall and 1-3-0 in section play with the loss.

GIRLS GOLF

Class 3A Sectional

Members of Moon Area’s girls golf team will compete for berths in the WPIAL Class 3A Individual Championships at Tuesday’s section qualifier tournament at Quicksilver Golf Club.

Five players will compete for the Tigers and look shoot 90 or better to qualify for the individual tournament, set to begin Monday, Sept. 28, at Hillcrest Country Club. The final round is scheduled to take place Oct. 5 at Valleybrook Country Club.

The top seven finishers will advance to the PIAA tournament.

Moon’s Liv DeGori reached the state event a year ago and will look to return during her final season. DeGori finished fifth at last year’s WPIAL tournament by shooting 81-84-165.

Moon wrapped up its regular season Friday with a 191-227 victory over Chartiers Valley at Nevillewood Country Club to finish with a record of 6-8.

DeGori, in her final regular-season match, went out in style, as she birdied holes 8 and 9 to shoot an even-par round of 36. Hope Cordle (49), Lily Giunipero (51) and Adi Hallahan (55) completed the scoring for the Tigers. Aubree Hover led Chartiers Valley by shooting 49.

Class 2A Sectional

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Katie Seuss came up short Monday in her bid to qualify for the Class 2A Individual Championships.

The target score for Monday’s qualifier was 91 and Seuss shot 95 to finish her season.

BOYS GOLF

Avonworth 183, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 201

Chase Hogan shot 35 to earn medalist honors and lift the Antelopes past the Chargers Monday in a Class 2A Section 4 clash at Moon Golf Club.

Nolan Meyer paced OLSH with a round of 37, followed by Matthew Prince (38), Wyatt Walsh and Ryan DeNinno (41) and Garrett Carlowski (44).

The loss left OLSH with a final Class 2A Section 4 record of 8-4.

The Chargers will move on to the Class 2A individual qualifier Tuesday at Shannopin Country Club, where the target score will be 81. Competing for OLSH will be Prince, Walsh, DeNinno, Meyer and Carlowski.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Bethel Park 3, Moon Area 0

The Blackhawks took three straight from the Tigers in a nonsection match, winning by set scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-8.

Gabby Bitsura posted 16 assists for Moon while Caroline Diana registered six kills, one ace and three blocks.

Cornell 3, Nazareth Prep 1

The Raiders improved to 3-5 overall with a nonsection win over the Saints. No other details were available.
