High schools: OLSH girls claim ‘A’ title at Youthtowne Clash
Placing four runners among the top 25, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s girls varsity team won the Class A portion of the Youthtowne Clash cross country meet, which attracted 42 teams overall and 1,100 runners.
The Chargers finished second overall among 18 girls varsity teams at the event, which took place Friday.
Eva Crofford ran her best race of season and led the OLSH girls with an eighth-place finish and a time of 19 minutes, 59 seconds on the 5k course.
Hannah Hayes and Jules Goshen took the next two places overall with times of 20:09 and 20:10, respectively.
Ellie Green also picked up a medal by placing 15th overall in 20:46.
Moon Area’s Sonya Taylor placed third overall in the girls varsity division with a time of 19:51.60. The Tigers’ Owen Romasco wound up 18th in the boys race with a time of 17:30.46.
Both the Moon boys and girls teams placed seventh in their division among 17 and 18 teams, respectively.
GIRLS SOCCER
Montour 6, Trinity 0
Irelynn Hobbs poured in four more goals and Uma Hann and Ciara Davis each added one to lead the Spartans past the Hillers Saturday in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 2 match.
Davis’ goal was the first of her varsity career while Hobbs’ four goals brought her season total to 20.
Maddie Lewis, Sydney Toulouse and Kendall Tielsch teamed to preserve the shutout in goal for Montour, which improved to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in section play.
Moon Area 4, DuBois 2
Julia Shaver scored a pair of goals to spark the Tigers past the Beavers in a nonsection game.
Maddie Shaver and Riley LaFayette each added single goals for Moon, which improved to 3-2-1 overall with the win.
Picking up assists for the Tigers were Julia Shaver, Taylor McConnell, Alena Taylor and LaFayette.
West Allegheny 2, Carlynton 0
The Class 3A Indians scored once in each half to top the Class 1A Cougars in a nonsection game. The loss leaves Carlynton 4-3 overall.
