HS roundup: OLSH rolls; Moon can’t cage Leopards; Carlynton downs Cornell

Tiernan McCullough poured in 22 points to help Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 52-35 victory over Laurel Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 4 boys basketball game at Laurel.

The Chargers connected on four 3-pointers in the first period alone to open up a 17-9 lead and they went on to the easy win.

McCullough scored 11 points in each half, as the Chargers built a 26-15 lead at halftime. Nolan Reed, who had two of those first-quarter 3-pointers, added eight points for OLSH, which improved to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the section.

Tyler Stuart led Laurel with nine points.


Lincoln Park 72, Moon Area 58

Josh Pratt erupted for 30 points and the Leopards got the jump on the visiting Tigers in a Class 5A Section 4 victory.

Lincoln Park, ranked No. 3 among Class 5A schools by TribLive, improved to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in section play with the win. Moon, ranked No. 4, fell to 12-3 overall and 4-3 in the section.

The Tigers sliced into the Leopards’ first-quarter lead to trail 37-30 at halftime, but Lincoln Park outscored Moon 21-12 in the third quarter to lead 58-42 heading into the final eight minutes.

Jeremiah Pratt added 14 points for the Leopards and Malcolm Frye finished with 14.

Jackson Bauman led Moon with 15 points while AJ Buford added 13 and Caden Kopay 10.


Chartiers Valley 68, Montour 43

Jake Lewis scored a game-high 22 points and Julius Best contributed 18 as the Colts rolled past the visiting Spartans in a Class 5A Section 4 game.

Chartiers Valley, ranked No. 1 among 5A schools, improved to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the section. The Colts built a 33-19 halftime lead and led 50-32 heading into the final quarter.

Robert Schmitt scored 12 points for Montour, which dropped to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the section, and Loic Kalau finished with 11.


Carlynton 64, Cornell 51

Ishaga Barrie helped the Cougars get off to a fast start with 13 first-half points as host Carlynton downed the Raiders in a nonsection contest.

Isaac Anker contributed 10 in the first half as the Class 3A Cougars led 33-22. A 25-point third-quarter outburst, fueled in part by nine points each from Barrie and Mikey Jenkins, put the game away for Carlynton, which improved to 5-11 overall.

Barrie finished with 24 for the Cougars while Anker added 12, Jenkins 11 and Justin Williams 10.

Eduardo Benitez scored 24 points to lead Class 1A Cornell, which fell to 3-12 overall, and Terrance Collington added nine.


Beaver 64, Sto-Rox 52

Philip Marino led three players in double figures with 23 points to lead the Class 4A Bobcats past the Class 3A Vikings in a nonsection game at Sto-Rox.

Beaver got off to a fast start, leading 29-15 at halftime, and the visitors maintained a healthy margin throughout the rest of the game.

Logan Weiland added 13 points for the Bobcats and William Haller had 10.

L.J. Washington led Sto-Rox with 18 points and Adam Thomas added 13 for the Vikings, who dropped to 6-9 overall.


GIRLS BASKETBALL

Chartiers Valley 47, Montour 30

The Colts built a 31-13 halftime lead and added to it by outscoring the Spartans 13-3 in the third quarter on the way to a Class 5A Section 3 game at Chartiers Valley.

Alyssa Davis and Tenley O’Connor each scored 14 points to lead the Colts and McKenna Helfrick added 10.

Tiffany Miller scored nine points for Montour, which fell to 12-4 overall and 4-4 in the section.


South Allegheny 29, Carlynton 26

Jazz Farnian scored 11 points and the Gladiators came back to defeat the Cougars in a nonsection contest at South Allegheny.

Carlynton, which fell to 5-10 overall, trailed 15-11 at halftime and pulled to within 19-18 heading into the final quarter.

The Cougars, led by Lucy Vetter’s 12 points, took the lead in the late stages but South Allegheny hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to pull out the victory.


PIHL HOCKEY

Moon Area 8, Richland 2

Peyton Whartenby scored a pair of goals and Eric Hartman added a goal and four assists to lead the Tigers past the Rams in a Varsity A Blue Division matchup Monday night at RMU Island Sports Center.

The two teams were deadlocked 1-1 after one period, but Moon used goals from Brody Eckert and Whartenby to take a 3-1 lead into the final period.

The Tigers put the game away with five third-period goals. Scoring for Moon were Gio Thompson, Tanner Desselle, Jordan Rieke, LJ Defilippo and Whartenby.

Logan Rieke added three assists for Moon, which improved to 11-3-1-1, good for third place in the division.

Blackhawk 4, Montour 1

Aidan Jennings scored the only goal for the Spartans, and it was too little too late in a loss to the Cougars in a Varsity A Blue Division game played Monday night at RMU Island Sports Center.

Blackhawk led 3-0 after two periods before Jennings scored a short-handed goal off an assist from Trey Varga in the fourth minute of play in the final period. But Blackhawk added a final tally six minutes later to seal the win.

Montour dropped to 4-10-1-1 with the loss.
