Moon Township officials are encouraging residents to participate in the community’s growing military banner program, which honors local veterans and active-duty service members.
Township officials said Moon has a longstanding tradition of military service, with residents and their families serving in the armed forces both domestically and overseas. The community also has long supported local Air National Guard and Army Reserve activities based in the township.
The Moon Township Military Banner Program was established in 2019 and is operated by an all-volunteer team of township residents. The program’s goal is to recognize and commemorate the military service of local residents and their family members.
The township’s first military banner was installed in May 2020 in honor of U.S. Army Spc. Matthew Bowe, who was killed in action in Iraq in February 2007.
Since its launch, the program has expanded to include more than 100 banners displayed throughout the township. The banners are currently installed along Beaver Grade Road between Ewing Road and University Boulevard, with additional displays now extending along Thorn Run Road from Cherrington Parkway to Baintree Road.
Township resident Beth Feather said she obtained a banner in memory of her father, Reid Feather, a World War II veteran, after he passed.
“It was just a way to honor him that was simple and fun,” Beth Feather said. “I enjoy looking at all the folks who have hosted their banners.”
Officials said the $130 program fee includes a large 24-by-36-inch pole banner with mounting brackets that is displayed annually, a smaller commemorative lawn flag for personal use and inclusion on the township’s online veteran honor roll.
The banner display season runs each year from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. Moon Township’s Department of Public Works installs and maintains the banners year-round.
Township officials said all local veterans and military families are encouraged to participate. Volunteers with the banner committee are also available to assist applicants with paperwork and locating military service records needed to verify eligibility.
Applications and additional information are available through Moon Township Military Banner Program. Officials said residents may also contact the township administration office at 412-262-1700 for more information.
