Open house registration available for tour of new Pittsburgh International Airport terminal

If recent history is any indication, you’ll need to act quickly if you want to get an early glimpse of Pittsburgh International Airport’s new landside terminal.

Airport officials announced Friday that registration for an Oct. 11 Community Open House is now underway, and those interested can sign up and choose their preferred time.

The Open House is scheduled to run from noon to 7 p.m. and is free and open to all members of the public. Complimentary parking will be provided. Registration is required, and space is limited.

When the airport put out a call for volunteers to help put the new terminal through a dress rehearsal in September, the public responded in droves. An estimated 10,000 people came forward in the first 24 hours, and eventually airport officials pulled the plug after 18,000 people signed up.

The public trial for the $1.7 billion airport will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, and upward of 2,000 people are expected to participate.

The Oct. 11 Open House will give 1,500 people per hour the opportunity to see and explore the new pre-security terminal before it opens to travelers. This includes the opportunity to see the new terminal ceiling and lighting that reflects the rolling hills and stars of Western Pennsylvania and the tree columns that reflect the region’s trees – and are just as unique.

A few things to know:

  • Visitors will select a one-hour time slot for their visit. If you are unable to select a specific time, all slots are full for that hour.
  • Each adult will need to register separately and should use a unique email address for registration. A registration that uses an email that has already been used for a registration will be rejected as a duplicate.
  • Adults may register children under the age of 18 with their registration. Please do not duplicate registrations of children. Children must arrive at the same time as the adult with whom they’re registered and must remain with that adult at all times.

With the tremendous response from Pittsburghers for the public trial, officials expect that available time slots will fill quickly.

“We’ve said from the beginning that this new state-of-the-art terminal is built for Pittsburgh, by Pittsburgh and we are excited to open the doors to the public to tour,” Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said.

“This is the front door to the region and the public should be very proud of what this community has accomplished. From the excellent work of our local union trades to public and governmental support at all levels, this amazing community has been a key partner in helping to build the future of the region and lead the industry.”

Visitors will be able to explore at their own pace and learn about the new terminal. The event will feature a variety of activities for all ages with multiple community partners including the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Kamin Science Center, Tree Pittsburgh and the Airport Authority’s xBridge program, offering interactive, educational and hands-on activations.

The link to register is in the story and now also here: https://communityopenhouse.pittransformed.com/ The reason you must act quickly is because they limit the number of reservations available. If you really want to go, then you should secure your spot. I remember when the current ground terminal opened in 1992 (I think) and my girlfriends and I went for dinner, shopping and to check the place out. Its a great memory 30+ years later! – SReis
