RMU travels to take on Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo
Success doesn't always follow when a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team plays a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team, which is a scenario that the Robert Morris Colonials are aware of.
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Colonials will have their second opportunity this season to defeat an FBS team when they travel to New York to play the Buffalo Bulls of the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
Buffalo enters the 3:30 p.m. game with a 1-2 record, having defeated another FCS team in Albany, but losing two consecutive games to Florida International and Penn State.
The Bulls have used two quarterbacks thus far, though Elijah Holmes leads the team with 253 yards passing. Wide receiver Chance Morrow has provided most of the offensive production with 20 receptions for 221 yards and five touchdowns.
The Colonials are 2-1 overall and sit in first place in the Northeast Conference standings with a 1-0 mark. Robert Morris has victories over Wagner and West Virginia State, while losing to Akron in their last game against an FBS opponent.
RMU quarterback Carson Haggard is off to an outstanding start, as he's completed 51 of 85 passes for 609 yards and seven touchdowns. Wide receiver Galen Combs is atop the conference in receiving, averaging 102.3 yards per game with 15 catches for 307 yards. Combs has five TD receptions and also returned a punt for a touchdown. Defensively, the Colonials played well until allowing 45 points to Akron.
Robert Morris is 0-4 in its recent history against FBS opponents, with losses to Air Force, Utah State and West Virginia in addition to the loss earlier this season against Akron.
Until 2006, the FBS and FCS were known in much simpler terms as Division 1-A and Division 1-AA. In football, the NCAA also has Division II, Division III and NAIA programs.
