Rotary EPIC Day of Service: Community impact in the West Hills and beyond

Rotary clubs throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania – including several in the West Hills — will participate Saturday, May 16, in a coordinated regional volunteer effort aimed at supporting communities through cleanup, food assistance and service projects.

The Rotary EPIC Day of Service, organized through Rotary District 7305, will involve projects in communities including Carnegie, Crafton-Ingram, McKees Rocks and Moon Township, according to organizers.

Volunteers will participate in projects focused on beautification, environmental stewardship, food insecurity, youth engagement, veteran support and community improvement.

Rotary District Gov. Felicia Mycyk said the event is intended to strengthen collaboration and community engagement throughout the region.

“The emphasis is on creating a stronger sense of belonging while developing leaders, expanding collaboration, and making service more visible, engaging, and impactful throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania,” Mycyk said in a statement.

Projects scheduled throughout the district include community and trail cleanups, tree planting, food and pet pantry support, youth-led service activities and partnerships with nonprofits and community organizations.

Organizers said volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate. Some projects are designed to accommodate families and youth volunteers.

Several projects will take place in the West Hills:

  • In the Carnegie-Collier area, CCRC is partnering with Paws Across Pittsburgh to distribute pet food and supplies to any community family in need. CCRC is holding a food drive working with several community businesses and other nonprofits to collect supplies to give out at Carnegie Park starting at 11 a.m.
  • A similar effort will take place in McKees Rocks, as pet food and supplies will be donated to the Focus on Renewal pet pantry, which is short on supplies. The local Human Society is also doing a free dog vaccine clinic in the area.
  • In Moon, volunteers will plant food-bearing plants and trees in the Mooncrest neighborhood to help provide residents with a sustainable and beautifying garden. Work is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at 308 Hemlock Drive in Moon Township.
  • In Crafton-Ingram, volunteers will be involved in two community beautification projects – one is an annual highway cleanup effort at the Route 60/I-79 interchange and one is a flower planting effort. The latter project’s location is 100 Stolz Ave. in Crafton.

Rotary District 7305 includes more than 70 Rotary clubs serving a nine-county region in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
