Mother Nature proved the ultimate winner Friday night when Montour and Moon squared off in a WPIAL football matchup at Tiger Stadium.
With Montour holding a 13-0 lead, officials canceled the game with 8 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in the second quarter due to inclement weather.
Alan Alcalde, athletic director for the Moon Area School District, said the nonconference game is considered no-contest and will not be replayed.
The two teams will need to wait another year to determine bragging rights, as Moon will visit Montour during the 2025 season.
Montour led 6-0 in the first quarter on Kaleb Platz’s touchdown run, and at the end of the quarter, the game was halted for 30 minutes due to lightning concerns.
The Spartans tacked on another touchdown when Trey Hopper connected with Daniel Batch before the game ultimately was washed out for good with 8:54 left in the second quarter.
The two teams, both 1-0, will return to action Friday – weather permitting. Montour will travel to Trinity to take on the Hillers while Moon also will hit the road, opposing Penn-Trafford in Harrison City.
Penn-Trafford downed Mt. Lebanon 28-7 Friday.
In other games involving West Hills area schools Friday night, Fort Cherry got the best of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 41-14, Carlynton moved to 2-0 with a 21-0 blanking of Avella, Seton LaSalle topped Bishop Canevin, 21-14, in the Crusaders’ season-opener and Cornell improved to 2-0 with a 27-3 win over California.
The results of the Sto-Rox-Carmichaels matchup were not available.
Devonte Dean had a hand in all three of Carlynton’s scores, as his 1-yard touchdown run snapped a 0-0 tie in the third quarter. Dean then connected on two touchdown passes – one from 26 yards to Damien Holloway and the other a 3-yard strike to Paul Work — to close the scoring.
Dean finished with eight completions in 18 attempts for 118 yards and the two scores.
Fort Cherry, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in PA Football News’ preseason rankings, used a pair of short touchdown runs by Matt Sieg to build a 13-0 first-quarter lead against OLSH.
But the Chargers, who fell to 1-1, pulled to within one score on Vann Kavals’ 15-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Davis.
Sieg added his third touchdown run of the game early in the second quarter, and his two-point conversion run widened the Rangers’ lead to 21-7.
OLSH would not quit, however, and Kavals’ short touchdown run and a conversion kick left the Chargers trailing by just seven points at 21-14.
But Fort Cherry made it a two-score game in the final stages of the first half on Ryan Huey’s 1-yard touchdown run, and the conversion kick made it 28-14.
That was as close as OLSH would get as the Rangers added two more second-half touchdowns to win going away. Huey rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns for Fort Cherry.
The Chargers will go after their second win of the season Friday when Seton La Salle visits Moon High School Stadium for a 7 p.m. matchup Friday.
Bishop Canevin battled Seton LaSalle – ranked No. 3 in Class 2A by the Pittsburgh Union Progress – to a 7-7 first-quarter stalemate. Kole Olszewski scored on a 1-yard run to give the Crusaders an early lead.
But Seton LaSalle tied the game on Michael Pastirik’s touchdown pass and then scored on a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter to make it 21-7.
Bishop Canevin’s final score came on Olszewski’s 38-yard touchdown pass.
Cornell has outscored its first two opponents 71-3 in building a 2-0 record. No information was available from Friday’s game.
