Construction crews are about to begin work to connect West Carson Street at the Pittsburgh-McKees Rocks border with the former CSX Intermodal facility in Stowe and a swath of undeveloped commercial property in between.
Planned out over three phases, the West Carson Extension will link the existing Route 51 with the recently-constructed Intermodal Way that stretches across much of the former Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad property that’s now available for shovel-ready real estate.
The borough has so far received grants totaling $1.25 million from the Commonwealth Finance Authority to facilitate the first two phases of the work. A $367,254 contract bid for phase one was recently awarded to CTM Construction of Monaca.
Council had to approve a transfer of funds from a grant allocated for phase two to cover costs, which exceeded the initial project budget by slightly more than $100,000.
