Michael Hammerling scored 31 points, including four in overtime, to help Winchester Thurston edge Carlynton, 69-67, Sunday in the consolation game of the Aquinas Academy Tournament.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 4-5.
Carlynton built a 39-28 first-half lead, thanks in part to Damien Holloway’s 14 points. But Felix Zhang of Winchester Thurston came alive in the final quarter, draining three 3-pointers and 11 total points as the Bears pulled even at the end of regulation by outscoring the Cougars 18-9 in the fourth quarter.
Hammerling scored four points in the final quarter and that proved to be the difference.
Holloway led Carlynton with 22 points while Mikey Jenkins added 19 and Julian Torres 11.
Dalton 52, Our Lady of the Sacred Heat 41
Coy Wenger scored seven of his 16 points in the first quarter as the Bulldogs built a 10-point lead on the way to a win over the Chargers in the Wishes Can Happen Tournament in Canton, Ohio.
Dalton opened up a 19-9 lead and held a 32-21 edge after two quarters.
Brady Hienight scored 13 points or the winners and Matthew Heatwole added 10.
Jake Johnson scored 16 points to pace OLSH, which dropped to 6-3 overall. The Chargers were hurt by some subpar free throw shooting, as they converted just 6 of 15 to 13 of 21 for Dalton.
Western Beaver 79, Cornell 34
No details were available from this game, which was played at South Side High School. The Raiders fell to 1-8 with the loss.
GIRLS: Moon Area 40, Armstrong 31
Jayla Brown scored 16 points and the Tigers used a fourth-quarter advantage to beat the River Hawks in the Butler Tournament.
Moon jumped out to a 12-5 first-quarter lead, then saw Armstrong rally to pull within a point at halftime, 16-15. The River Hawks used a one-point advantage in the third quarter to pull even heading into the final quarter, but the Tigers outscored the River Hawks 13-4 to take the victory.
Moon, which won its tournament opener Saturday night, improved to 5-3 after the tournament.
Maria Depner added 10 points for the Tigers.
California 51, Carlynton 23
Jocelyn Griffin scored 14 points to pace the Cougars, who fell to 4-5 on the season in the championship game of the Mapletown Tournament.
California led 9-4 after one period and 25-13 at halftime but put the game away with a 14-3 advantage in the third quarter.
Lucy Vetter added four points for Carlynton, which hosts Northgate on Jan. 2 in a section matchup.
