West Hills athletes brought home two dozen medals – including one gold – to highlight the local contingent’s performances at Wednesday’s WPIAL Track and Field Championships, held at Slippery Rock University’s William C. Lennox Track.
Moon Area freshman Rachel Stepp claimed gold in the Class 3A 400-meter event, as she clocked a time of 55.54 seconds to edge North Allegheny’s Isabella Costa, who finished in 55.96.
The Tigers’ 4×400-meter boys relay squad of Jared Moyer, Marcus McGill, Evan Senkevich and Samuel Herrera wound up with a silver medal by finishing in 3 minutes, 20.09 seconds.
Butler won the event in a time of 3:17.49, which is a meet record.
McGill also notched an individual third-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 49.38 while Herrera placed fourth in the 800 in 1:57.78.
Moon’s Tyler Giunipero notched a pair of medal-worthy finishes in his two individual events, placing fourth in the 1,600 in 4:17.00 and fifth in the 3,200 in 9:26.23
The top eight finishers in each event took home medals.
Also bringing home the hardware for the Tigers were Jacob Bailey, who finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 1 inch, and Ben Delsite, who placed sixth in the triple jump (44-04.50).
In addition to Stepp, the Moon girls team had three other individual medalists and one relay group that finished on the medal stand.
Maria Depner placed third in the discus with a throw of 124-7, while Lydia Delsite placed fifth in the long jump at 36-08.0 and Sonya Taylor finished seventh in the 800 at 2:19.89.
Moon’s 4×400 relay team of Elise Ashcroft, Stepp, Sonya Taylor and Alena Taylor wound up sixth with a time of 4:01.85.
Montour’s Tiffany Miller sped to a third-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:17.99.
Seven area Class 3A athletes will move on to the PIAA meet later this month by virtue of their performances: Stepp, Miller, Lydia Delsite, Depner, Giunipero in the 1,600, McGill and Herrera. Also making the grade was the Tigers’ 4×400 boys relay squad.
In the Class 2A girls meet, two individuals and two relay groups earned berths in the PIAA meet .
Jordynn Carter placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 37-03.75 while Carlynton’s 4×800 relay team of Isabella Sysak, Grace Prepelka, Lani Blevins and Bridget McNamara placed third with a time of 9:44.65.
Blevins also placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:32.66 and the Cougars’ 4×100 group of Hayleigh Loeffeert, Carter, Clare Ruffing and Riley Mauro placed fourth with a time of 49.67.
All of those Carlynton athletes qualified to compete in the state meet, set for May 23-24 at Seth Grove Stadium, on the campus of Shippensburg University.
Also earning a trip to the state meet on the boys side was Carlynton’s Ryan Lewis, who finished fifth in the long jump with an effort of 21-05.50.
Several other West Hills athletes medaled in the Class 2A portion of the meet. On the girls side, Carlynton’s Mauro, who placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (48.30), and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Gianna Mosca, who finished eighth in the 3,200 (11:48.24), both won medals.
Also winning medals were members of OLSH’s 4×800 relay team, which finished seventh – Mira Mosca, Lindsay Bressler, Charlotte Gauntner and Gianna Mosca, who posted a time of 10:22.69.
In the Class 2A boys meet, Jermell Lindsay of Carlynton claimed a medal by finishing sixth in the 300 hurdles (42.55). Trey Moses of OLSH took home a pair of medals by placing seventh in the javelin (152-08) and eighth in the discus (140-07).
Other local girls competing in the 3A meet included Alyson Stepp of Moon, who finished ninth in the 3,200 (11:44.07); Elise Ashcroft (Moon, 12th-1,600, 5:30.69); Lindsey Armitage (Montour, 18th-400, 1:01.40); Alena Taylor (Moon, 11th-300 hurdles, 46.31); Joelle Ludwick (Montour, 16th-3,200, 12:04.06), Alyssa Francis (Montour, 14th-javelin, 111-00; Lydia Delsite (Moon, t14th-high jump, 4-11, and 11th-long jump, 17-00.50); Ellen Senkevich (Moon, 19th-high jump, 4-11, and 15th-triple jump, 34-07); Mika Scott (Montour, 16th-long jump, 16-10.50); and Camryn Connolly (Montour, 13-triple jump, 34-10.50)
Montour’s 4×800 relay team of Teagan Schaltenbrand, Ludwick, Miller and Elise Hornyak placed 11th in 10:04.26 and the Spartans’ 4×100 relay team of Tyanne Torbert, Camryn Connolly, Scott and Chloe Hornyak placed 18th in 50.541. Montour’s 4×400 team of Abigail Baldauff, Armitage, Miller and Sophia Saginaw wound up 15th in 4:11.72.
Other local boys competing in the 3A meet included Jared Moyer (Moon, 12th,-300 hurdles, 40.29); Brayden Freund (Moon, 13th-1,600, 4:30.66 and 15th-3,200, 9:58.74); Brady Tarquinio (Montour, 21st-400, 51.91), Jake Duncan (Moon, 14th-discus, 139-03); Elijah Thomas (Moon, 14th-pole vault, 13-03); and Ben Delsite (18th-long jump, 20-01).
Other local girls competing in the 2A meet included McNamara (11th-1,600, 5:37.04); Ruffing (10th-300 hurdles, 49.10, and 12th-long jump, 17-00.50), Hannah Hayes (OLSH, 13th-300 hurdles, 50.11); Milad Majed (Carlynton (10th-shot put, 31-06); and Carter (13th-long jump, 16-07.75).
In relays, Carlynton’s 4×400 meter group of Prepelka, Sysak, Mauro and McNamara placed 10th at 4:11.75 and OLSH’s quartet of Bressler, Ashlyn Johnson, Eva Crofford and Hayes wound up 14th in the same event in 4:20.17.
On the boys 2A side, Carlynton’s Ethan Moldovan finished 16th in the 3,200 in 10:28.91 and Henry Barbisch finished ninth in the shot put at 44-06.
