Girls basketball: Moon Area comes from behind to edge Montour, 43-40

Maria Depner scored a game-high 18 points and Moon Area came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat visiting Montour, 43-40, Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 girls basketball game.

Jaedin Griggs added 13 points for the Tigers, who trailed 16-13 at halftime and 28-26 heading into the final eight minutes.

There, Moon outscored Montour 17-12 to take the victory.

Jayla Brown and Katie DeMarco combined for 12 points for Moon, which improved to 4-2 in section play and 8-4 overall.

Zoe Woessner scored 13 points to lead Montour, which dropped to 1-4 in the section and 6-7 overall. Abby Cleary and Siena Palmer each contributed 10.

Montour coach Jordan Giles said her team followed its gameplan well for the most part and played hard.

“They were creating turnovers and boxing out,” she said of her team. “Unfortunately, our shots just weren’t falling for us.”

The Spartans also were hurt by subpar free throw shooting, as they connected on just 8 of 18 attempts from the line.

Montour also was victimized by a couple of costly turnovers late in the game that resulted in the Spartans giving up the lead.
