Girls basketball: OLSH girls edges Lincoln Park in OT; Bishop Canevin rolls to win while Sto-Rox falls

Camryn Hummel’s 3-pointer with a little over a minute to play in overtime proved to be decisive as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart claimed a 50-49 victory over Lincoln Park Thursday night in a nonsection game at OLSH’s Angela Activities Center.

Hummel’s 3-pointer gave the Chargers a one-point lead, and they used a layup from Macie Trombetta and two free throws from Leah Parker to build a five-point lead in the final minute of overtime.

Lincoln Park scored the game’s final four points, including two at the buzzer to make it closer.

Lola Garner’s 17 points led OLSH, now 2-0, while Trombetta added 10.

Patty Wesolowski scored 16 points to lead Lincoln Park, which outscored OLSH 7-4 in the fourth quarter to force overtime and then took a two-point lead in the extra period before Hummel’s go-ahead trey.

OLSH coach Don Eckerle said his team played well considering starting point guard Shae Trombetta was out sick and had to be replaced by her sister Macie, a freshman.

“At times we had two freshmen out there or two sophomores and a freshman,” Eckerle said. “A lot of kids are getting broken in. For the level of competition – Lincoln Park is pretty good – I thought we played well.”

Bishop Canevin 61, Perry Traditional Academy 26

Kya Cooley and Isabella Sysak combined for 43 points and the Crusaders used a hot start to take control early and whip the Commodores in a nonsection game.

Bishop Canevin bolted to a 25-4 first-quarter lead and that essentially was the game. The Crusaders outscored the Commodores 16-4 in the second quarter to expand their halftime lead to 41-8.

Cooley led the Crusaders with 22 points and Sysak added 21. Gianna Matthews also contributed 11 points for Bishop Canevin, which evened its record at 1-1.

Bishop Canevin coach Rob Travis said his team played much cleaner than it did in its season-opening loss to Burgettstown Wednesday, when the Crusaders committed 26 turnovers.

“We cut our turnovers in half (13) and our scorers knocked down their shots,” Travis said.

Burgettstown 53, Sto-Rox 30

Paige Kladowski scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the first half to send the Blue Devils on their way to a nonsection victory over the host Vikings.

Burgettstown led 17-4 after one quarter, with Kladowski scoring eight points. The Blue Devils widened the lead to 29-9 at halftime and owned a 45-18 edge going into the final quarter.

Andi Midler added 13 points and Savanna Rush chipped in 11 for Burgettstown.

Brooklyn Sykes scored eight points to lead Sto-Rox, which fell to 1-2.
