High school baseball: Moon rallies late to beat South Fayette; Bishop Canevin whips Sewickley Academy

Andrew Cross’ two-run homer ignited a six-run sixth-inning rally and powered Moon Area to an 8-4 victory over visiting South Fayette Tuesday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 3 baseball matchup.

The Tigers trailed 4-2 heading into the sixth inning when Connor Kunkle singled and Cross followed with his two-run homer to tie the score at 4-4.

The Tigers then strung together six straight hits to take the lead for good.

Savario Vandetti and Thad Longwell delivered run-scoring singles to make it 6-4 and after Vandetti stole home to make it 7-4, Kunkle came through with an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Kunkle led the Tigers’ 11-hit attack by going 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Nine players had at least one hit apiece for Moon. Longwell scored twice in addition to delivering his RBI single in the sixth.

Joey Marasco started for Moon and worked the first six innings, giving up five hits and four runs, one of which was earned. He walked two and struck out four in earning the victory. Ryan Cavanaugh worked the final inning and surrendered just a walk while striking out two.

Bishop Canevin 17, Sewickley Academy 2

Kole Olszewski banged out three doubles and drove in a pair of runs and Kellen Andruscik and Layne Gerba each collected three RBIs as the Crusaders overwhelmed the Panthers in a Class 1A Section 3 game that ended before four innings were completed.

Bishop Canevin bolted out of the gate, scoring eight runs in the first inning and that was all the Crusaders needed. Olszewski contributed two RBI doubles to the rally and Andruscik also added an RBI double. Bishop Canevin also scored twice on passed balls and once on a wild pitch in the inning.

Andruscik scored a pair of runs for Bishop Canevin, which outhit Sewickley Academy 13-3.

Jamin Brock and Aaryn Edwards each added two hits for Bishop Canevin; Brock also scored twice and drove in two runs while Edwards had a pair of RBIs.

Tyler Maddix pitched all four innings for the Crusaders, allowing three hits and no earned runs while walking four and striking out six.


Riverview 8, Carlynton 0

Rex Roberts had a pair of hits and drove in two runs and Lukas Duncan hurled a two-hitter as the Raiders blanked the Cougars in a Class 2A Section 3 matchup.

Roberts delivered RBI singles in the second and fourth innings for Riverview, which scored at least one run in every inning except the third.

Eric Firle and Isaac Anker managed the only hits for Carlynton. Firle pitched the first five innings for the Cougars and gave up five hits and five runs, none of which were earned as the Cougars committed six errors to one for the Raiders.
