Gavin Foley’s RBI single highlighted a six-run fourth-inning rally that proved to be the difference as Montour came from behind to beat McKeesport, 20-6, Wednesday in a WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 baseball game at McKeesport.
The Tigers scored four times in the second inning to erase an early 1-0 Montour lead, but the Spartans took the lead for good in the fourth and added on in the final innings to win big.
Zachary Black’s RBI single started the fourth-inning scoring for the Spartans, and Cyprian Slifkey’s run-scoring base hit cut the deficit to 4-3.
A balk allowed the tying run to score and Foley’s base hit made it 5-4. Michael Ivanoff followed with a double to increase the lead to 6-4 and Andrew Porto delivered a sacrifice fly to lengthen the lead to 7-4.
Black’s RBI single keyed a three-run fifth inning rally that made it 10-4.
Montour finished with 15 hits with Slifkey and Ivanoff each collecting three. Slifkey and Black finished with two RBIs apiece for the winners.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 12, South Side 0
Thomas Medwig and Chad Minton each had three hits and combined to drive in five runs as the Chargers blanked the Rams in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
OLSH struck for three runs in the first inning, five in the second and four in the third in a game that went just five innings.
Sean Hudac doubled home a run in the first and Minton added an RBI single. In the second, Medwig and Minton each had RBI base hits and Anthony Hansen tripled home two runs.
Medwig, Minton and Hudac each contributed run-scoring hits in the third inning for the Chargers, who finished with 13 hits in all.
Medwig worked all five innings on the mound and surrendered just three hits and a walk while striking out five.
Bishop Canevin 18, Clairton 5
Tyler Maddix put the host Crusaders on the scoreboard with a three-run first-inning home run, and they went on to claim an easy win over the Bears in a Class 1A Section 3 game.
Maddix finished with two hits and four RBIs for Bishop Canevin, which pounded out 18 hits in all.
Kellen Andruscik and Aaryn Edwards each contributed three hits and three RBIs, with Andruscik scoring three times and Edwards once.
Brady Wagner chipped in with three hits and two RBIs for the Crusaders, who scored eight runs in that first inning. Jamin Brock doubled home a run, Brandon Scholz had an RBI single and Kole Olszewski tripled home the final run of the frame.
Bethel Park 4, Moon Area 3
Ethan Stanhoff’s fourth-inning RBI single snapped a 3-3 tie, and that proved to be the deciding blow in the Black Hawks’ Class 5A Section 2 victory over the Tigers.
Moon jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Angelo Fachet and Connor Kunkle, but Bethel Park responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
A hit batsman with the bases loaded in the second moved Bethel Park in front 3-2, but Moon tied the game in the third on Kunkle’s second RBI single of the day.
The Black Hawks then mounted what proved to be the game-winning rally in the fourth on a single, an error and Stanhoff’s RBI single.
Each team finished with just six hits in the game and Kunkle was the only Tiger to collect two.
Mohawk 18, Sto-Rox 0
The Warriors used a 12-run second inning after opening the game with six and overran the Vikings in a Class 3A Section 1 game that went just three innings.
Cash Stratton and Jackson Peters each had two hits and drove in three runs for Mohawk, and Drew Wrona had two hits and two RBIs for the winners.
Sto-Rox did not manage a hit in the game.
Apollo-Ridge 7, Carlynton 2
A two-run error in the bottom of the sixth inning opened the gates for the Vikings, as they pushed across six runs to wipe out a 2-0 deficit and beat the Cougars in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
Carlynton took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI fielder’s choice and an error, and the Cougars maintained that lead until the sixth. Apollo-Ridge took advantage of three Carlynton errors in the sixth and also got a two-run single from Zac Myers.
Isaac Anker led Carlynton’s nine-hit attack with three hits and Eric Firle added two.
Anker went the distance on the mound and gave up six hits and two walks while striking out nine. Only one of the seven runs Apollo-Ridge scored was earned.
SOFTBALL
Carlynton 21, Fort Cherry 6
The Cougars parlayed eight hits and eight Rangers errors into an easy Class 2A Section 3 victory.
Carlee Hughes sparked the Carlynton attack with a double and a two-run triple. Hanalee Nordeen scored three times and contributed a two-run single and an RBI double.
Sarah Loney delivered a sacrifice fly and a two-run single and Ava Kimberling contributed a bases-loaded triple and a sacrifice.
Danica DeCecco limited the Rangers to three hits on the mound and reached base in all four of her at-bats for Carlynton.
Bishop Canevin 16, Rochester 6
Lizzy Fuchs and Desiah Trent each had two hits and drove in three runs while Angel Summers and Lia Pilarski each knocked in two as the Crusaders whipped the Rams in a Class 1A Section 1 game.
Bishop Canevin spotted Rochester a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first and then added four more in the second to take control.
Alexis Summers had three of the Crusaders’ 12 hits and scored twice. Pilarski added two hits and scored three times for the winners.
Macie McClain went the distance on the mound, giving up six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out 11 for Bishop Canevin.
Chartiers Valley 11, Moon Area 1
Gianna Scalise’s two-run double sparked a five-run second-inning rally and that proved to be all the Colts needed in defeating the Tigers in a Class5A Section 3 game at Chartiers Valley.
Moon scored its lone run in the first inning on Kendall Trexler’s RBI base hit, but that lead would not last long.
Kaitlyn Truong tied the game in the second with an RBI single and Scalise followed with her two-run double to make it 3-1. Chartiers Valley added another run on a fielder’s choice and the final run of the inning scored on Delaney O’Connor’s RBI double.
Taylor Walsh and Alana Woods each finished with two hits for the Colts. Moon was limited to four hits with Macy Trost accounting for two of them.
South Fayette 18, Montour 3
The Lions sent 14 hitters to the plate in the third inning and cashed in on 10 runs to take charge in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Montour.
Evie Vuono doubled and hit a three-run homer in that pivotal inning for South Fayette, which pounded out 15 hits in picking up the win.
Montour managed just four hits, with Cayley Hughes picking up two of them – an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Baldwin 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0
The Highlanders swept the Chargers, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23, in the varsity match and OLSH’s junior varsity team lost 2-0.
