Madelyn Roberts scored a game-high 19 points, including a key basket with less than a minute to play, to help West Greene edge Bishop Canevin, 43-41, Wednesday night in a Class 1A Section 2 girls basketball matchup.
The Crusaders trailed by five points, 36-31, with 3 minutes, 38 seconds to play, but eventually took a 37-36 lead with 1:34 left on a follow-up basket by Natalie Kirsch.
West Greene’s Samantha Zimmerman answered with a shot inside to put the Pioneers back on top, 38-37, with 1:11 to play. After a Bishop Canevin miss, Roberts got free for a fast-break layup to make it a three-point lead for West Greene, 40-37, with 56 seconds remaining.
A Bishop Canevin free throw cut the lead to 40-38, but Kylee Davis’ two free throws for West Green made it 42-38 with 37 seconds left.
A 3-pointer by Kirsch with 20 seconds left trimmed the deficit to 42-41 and after Davis hit one of two free throws for West Greene to make it 43-41, Bishop Canevin worked for a final shot.
A pass inside went out of bounds with 3 seconds to play, but the Crusaders retained possession. But on the ensuing inbounds play, a pass into the corner couldn’t be handled cleanly, and time expired without Bishop Canevin getting off a shot.
The Crusaders were hurt by poor free throw shooting, converting just 5 of 10 from the line, and also committed 22 turnovers. West Greene also had major problems at the free throw line, as the Pioneers made just 8 of 21.
The Crusaders opened the game by outscoring the Pioneers 13-6. But West Greene rebounded in the second quarter, putting 17 points on the board to just four for Bishop Canevin.
That left West Greene with a 23-17 lead, and the Pioneers took a 30-25 lead into the final eight minutes.
Kirsch scored 13 points to lead Bishop Canevin, which already has locked up a spot in the WPIAL playoffs with one section game remaining – Thursday’s contest at Mapletown.
The Crusaders fell to 5-8 in section play and 10-9 overall and are locked into fifth place in the section.
