High school basketball: Cornell boys snap losing streak; Carlynton girls win

Walter Clarit scored 18 points and registered eight steals to help Cornell to a 48-40 victory over visiting Urban Pathways Charter School Wednesday night in a WPIAL boys basketball game.

The nonsection win snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Raiders, who won their opening game of the season before dropping the next 10 in a row prior to Wednesday.

Eduardo Benitez added 12 points for Cornell, which trailed 12-9 after one quarter but caught fire in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 19-6 to take a 28-18 lead at halftime.

Neaguan Knight, Jaheim Moore and Ryan Johnson each scored 10 points for Urban Pathways.

GIRLS: Carlynton 42, Steel Valley 27

Lucy Vetter scored a game-high 18 points to lift the visiting Cougars over the Ironmen in a nonsection matchup.

Carlynton led throughout the game and improved to 6-7 overall with the victory.

The Cougars built a 19-13 lead at halftime and then held the Ironmen to just three third-quarter points, taking a 27-16 lead into the final eight minutes.

Carlynton saved its most productive quarter for last, outscoring Steel Valley 15-11.

Shaunte Deluca Turner added eight points for the Cougars and Cydney McClendon contributed seven.
