Lucy Vetter scored a game-high 20 points to spark Carlynton to a 46-37 victory over Steel Valley Wednesday night in a nonsection girls basketball game at Carlynton.
The win boosted Carlynton’s overall record to 4-9 on the season.
Carlynton led 11-7 after one quarter, but Steel Valley – led by Aniylah Childs’ 8 points – used a 17-point second quarter to take a 24-22 lead at halftime.
The Cougars answered with a similar effort in the third quarter, outscoring the Ironmen 17-8 to take control.
Vetter scored eight of her points in the third quarter for Carlynton, which used a 7-5 edge in the final quarter to close out the win.
SWIMMING
Brentwood vs. Cornell
The Raiders posted a 76-62 victory in the girls nonsection meet Monday night while Brentwood’s boys came away with a 66-36 victory.
In the girls meet, Grace Turko won a pair of individual events.
On Saturday, the Raiders’ boys contingent battled at the Jaguar Winter Shootout at Thomas Jefferson High School. Cornell’s Noah Pickett set meet records in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes and .48 seconds, and the 500 freestyle (4:54.67).
Both times should earn Pickett solid seeds in the WPIAL championship meet Feb. 26-27.
Sam Bleakley secured a MAC Championship cut time in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.85.
WRESTLING
West Allegheny 54, Montour 24
The Spartans got pins from Rook Smith and Jacob Chacon, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Indians in a Class 3A Section 1 dual meet at Montour.
Smith, wrestling at 160 pounds, stopped Graysen Gardner at 1 minute, 49 seconds. Chacon, competing at 145, pinned Mason Bryan at 3:30.
Montour managed just two more victories on the night and both came by forfeit. West Allegheny recorded five victories by fall and three more by forfeit.
