Rae Johnston came up big Wednesday night, scoring 21 points and dishing out 15 assists to spark Sto-Rox to a 50-17 victory over visiting New Brighton in a WPIAL Class 3A Section 1 girls basketball game.
With the win, the Vikings improved to 7-11 overall and 2-9 in section play. Sto-Rox had lost nine of its previous 11 games going into Wednesday night’s matchup.
Johnston scored 13 of her points in the first half to enable Sto-Rox to build a 26-11 halftime lead. Johnston totaled six points in the first quarter and seven in the second.
The Vikings put the game away by outscoring New Brighton 14-2 in the third quarter.
Sto-Rox coach Jeff Stuart saluted Johnston’s play.
“We were moving the ball well tonight as a team and Rae was distributing it very well,” he said. “She was out there trying to get the girls involved who usually don’t play much or score any points. She was dishing it around.”
Nynal Griffin added six points for Sto-Rox while Kimya Gilmore’s nine points led New Brighton.
BOYS: Winchester Thurston 72, Sto-Rox 56
Matt Southers poured in 15 first-quarter points on the way to a game-high 28 to lead the Bears past the visiting Vikings in a non-section game.
Southers’ early outburst helped Winchester Thurston build a 23-16 lead. Both teams cooled off in the second quarter, with the Bears owning a 9-3 advantage, and the first half ended with Winchester Thurston in front, 32-19.
The Bears heated up again in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 20-13, and that proved too much for Sto-Rox to overcome.
Aiden Diemme scored 14 points for Winchester Thurston. MJ Thomas led Sto-Rox, which fell to 2-17 overall, with 16 points and Javon Nelson added 15 in a losing cause.
Monessen 72, Cornell 43
Rodney Johnson scored a game-high 26 points and the Greyhounds got off to a quick start to take control on the way to a non-section victory over the Raiders.
Monessen sped to a 22-8 first-quarter lead and owned a 39-20 halftime advantage. The Greyhounds never let up, outscoring Cornell 33-23 in the final two quarters.
Devontae Robinson added 12 points for Monessen and Tayvin Craggette scored 10.
Terrance Collington’s 17 points led Cornell, which fell to 2-16 with the loss. Walter Clarit added 12 points for the Raiders.
