High school wrestling: Franklin Regional eliminates Moon from WPIAL team championships

Moon Area’s bid to advance in the WPIAL Wrestling Team Championships was derailed Wednesday night as host Franklin Regional rolled to a 54-11 victory in the first round.

Franklin Regional, the unbeaten Class 3A Section 9 champion, extended its season-long dual meet winning streak to 14 by beating the Tigers. The Panthers added to that streak later Wednesday by stopping North Allegheny, 37-23, in the quarterfinals.

Moon, which advanced to Wednesday’s meet by beating Peters Township, 37-26, Monday, fell to 8-6 with the loss to Franklin Regional.

Moon managed just two individual victories on the night.

Michael Olszewski won by technical fall over Jordan Perks, 19-1, at 172 pounds. And at 285, Dawson Dobyns pinned Dylan Corso at 2 minutes, 57 seconds.

Of the remaining 11 matches, Franklin Regional won five by pin, two by technical fall, two by major decision and two by decision.

The 133-pound bout between Franklin Regional’s Chase Smith and Cael Yanek of Moon, was the closest match of the night, with Smith posting a 5-4 decision.
