Alexa Richardson’s RBI single snapped a 12-12 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning and gave Montour a 13-12 victory over Union Thursday in a WPIAL nonsection softball game at Montour.
The Spartans trailed 12-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but put six runs on the board to pull within a run. They plated a pair in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win.
Cayley Hughes started the sixth-inning rally with an RBI single, Caylee Moser followed with another RBI single and Paige Fiedler belted a three-run home run to pull the Spartans to within 12-10. Montour’s final run of the inning came home on a Union error.
In the seventh, Fiedler’s one-out RBI single drove home Emily McClean with the tying run, which allowed Fiedler to advance to second. After the second out, Richardson came through with her game-winning base hit.
Montour finished with 18 hits, and Hughes led the way by going 4 for 4 with four RBIs. Moser and Fiedler each had three hits, with Fiedler driving in four runs and Moser two. Richardson and Hailey Staub each contributed two hits, with Staub scoring twice.
Moon Area 16, Mars Area 0
Katie DeMarco was nearly perfect on the mound Thursday, holding Mars Area without a hit or a walk in Moon Area’s 16-0 non-section victory at Mars.
DeMarco struck out 15 batters and only two Mars hitters reached base safely – one on a hit batsman and one on a dropped third strike by the catcher.

Danica Bacu collected four hits and drove in three runs to lead Moon’s 16-hit attack.
Sydney Ray had three hits and three RBIs and Brooklyn Hall had two hits and drove in three. Taya Fitzerald contributed three hits for Moon.
Chartiers-Houston 20, Bishop Canevin 1
The Buccaneers pounded out 20 hits, including seven home runs in overpowering the Crusaders. Lauren Rush, Kiera Drilak and Seanna Riggle each smacked a pair of home runs for the winners. Rush drove in six runs, Drilak had five RBIs and Riggle finished with four.
BASEBALL
McKeesport 4, Carlynton 2
The Tigers made the most of three hits in defeating the Cougars in a nonsection game at McKeesport.
McKeesport scored once in the first inning on Brayden Ross’ two-out RBI single and then added three runs in the third on Tommy Minnick’s two-run triple and an error.
Isaac Anker doubled home a run for Carlynton and Tyler Heinrich’s RBI single in the fifth trimmed the deficit to 4-2, but the Cougars went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
Eric Firle had two of Carlynton’s four hits and also worked the first three innings on the mound, giving up four runs – three earned – on three hits while walking five and striking out four. Henrich pitched three innings of hitless relief.
Springdale 16, Sto-Rox 1
Joe Rosio drove in three runs while Joey Loebig and Wyatt Warywoda drove in two runs apiece to spark the Dynamos past the Vikings in a nonsection game.
Springdale scored 16 runs on just four hits in the game in spoiling Sto-Rox’s season-opener.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Montour 3, Mars Area 0
The Spartans swept the Fightin’ Planets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-9. in a nonsection match at Montour.
Dom Lach led the way with 10 kills for Montour while Isaiah Henderson added nine kills and four aces and Gaige Schoff had six kills and three aces.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 3, North Catholic 0
Isaac Tarbuk and Brady Rooney each had eight kills to pace the Chargers past the Trojans in a nonsection match. OLSH prevailed in three close sets, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19.
Tarbuk had one ace and one block to go with his eight kills while Rooney added one ace. Patrick Altmar contributed four kills and two blocks while Aiden Curry had two kills, one block and 20 assists.
Marco Buzzard led the Chargers, now 2-0, in receive percentage.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Sto-Rox 36, West Allegheny 6
Rae Johnston threw for two touchdowns while Viyhshaela Macon ran for two scores to lift the Vikings past the Indians in the season-opener.
Johnson connected on a 25-yard scoring strike to Kamiyah Thompson and later hit Dayonna Dozier on a 32-yard TD pass.
Macon scored on runs of 4 and 60 yards while Nynal Griffin tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kashmere Knotts for the Vikings’ final score.
Johnston also connected on three two-point conversion passes – one to Myla Bradford, one to Griffin and one to Brittni Blake.
