The Moon Area baseball team started the season with a bang Friday, as Tyler Ebner and Owen Amey combined to throw a no-hitter in the Tigers’ 11-0 win over Archbishop Carroll in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Ebner threw the first five innings, striking out five, while Amey blanked the Bulldogs over the sixth and final frame.
Nick Machusko led the Tigers’ offensive attack with three hits and two RBIs while Taylor Ebner collected two hits and drove in two runs. Sevi Vandetti had a triple and drove in two runs.
Moon is scheduled to play a pair of games Saturday and will scrimmage on Sunday before heading north.
Northgate 19, Sto-Rox 9
The Flames pushed across nine runs in the seventh inning to break open a 9-9 game and defeat the Vikings.
MJ Thomas had two hits, walked once, stole five bases and scored four runs for Sto-Rox. Zyair Dupree had a double and a single while Matt Harsh drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.
Greenbriar Christian Academy 11, Bishop Canevin 1
The Gators put seven runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back in defeating the Crusaders in a game played in Chesapeake, Va.
Carson Brinkley had one hit and drove in three runs for Greenbrier Christian and Blake Thomas had two hits and two RBIs.
Nate Astor had the lone hit for Bishop Canevin.
PIAA SWIMMING
Carlynton’s Evey Fahnestock and Cornell’s Mimi Chamberlain are scheduled to compete in the 100-yard breaststroke Saturday at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, taking place at the Kinney Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University in Lewisburg.
Chamberlain, a sophomore, competed in the 200 individual medley and placed second in the B final and 10th overall with a time of 2 minutes, 12.19 seconds.
Fahnestock, a sophomore, competed in the 50 freestyle and placed 26th overall with a time of 25.50 seconds.
Cornell’s Noah Pickett swam in the 100 butterfly Friday and finished fourth in the B Final and 12th overall with a time of 52.57.
Pickett also is scheduled to swim in the 500 freestyle Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Geneva 7, Moon Area 4
Jazlyn Rodriguez smacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Knights past the Tigers in a game played in Orlando, Fla.
Moon was limited to four hits; Alina McMahon’s triple was the only extra-base hit for the Tigers. Abbie Warnagiris had a hit and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for Moon while Katie DeMarco and Addyson Warren each had one hit for the Tigers.
Cornell 12, Sto-Rox 3
No details were available about this game between West Hills schools.
BOYS TENNIS
Montour vs. Ambridge/Quaker Valley
The Spartans posted a 5-0 victory over Ambridge in Monday’s season opener and then fell 5-0 to Quaker Valley Thursday at Clever Park.
In the win over Ambridge, Jonah Camardese, Trey Varga and Rav Mamurjonov picked up victories in singles play. The first doubles team of Dom Passaro and Scott Berg won in straight sets, as did the Spartans’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Matthew Swayda and Donnie Seeremek.
Camardese lost a competitive match to Quaker Valley’s Will Meagher at No. 1 singles and Passaro and Berg also played well in a loss to Carter Hawes and Patrick Connors.
