Our Lady of the Sacred Heart spotted Fort Cherry a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but answered with five runs in its half of the inning and went on to overpower the Rangers, 15-3, Friday in a Class 2A Section 3 five-inning softball game at Youthtowne.
OLSH pitcher Camryn Hummel surrendered two hits in the opening frame and then yielded just one more the rest of the way. She walked four and struck out six.
Hummel also slugged a two-run homer for the Chargers, and that gave them a 10-3 lead in the fourth inning.
Mya Eshenbaugh collected three hits, drove in four runs and scored twice for OLSH. Eshenbaugh’s two-run first-inning triple cut Fort Cherry’s lead to 3-2 and Julie Pinter followed with an RBI single to tie the score. OLSH took the lead on a two-run error later in the frame.
Sophia Wasko added three hits for the Chargers, who finished with 18 hits. Leann Walzer, Hummel, Lizzie Smith and Pinter each had two hits while Claire Bulls drove in two runs.
Montour 10, Chartiers Valley 0
Savanah McClean tossed a five-inning three-hitter to lead the Spartans past the Colts in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Montour.
Hailey Herbst’s two-run double keyed a four-run first inning that also saw Emmy Ellis drive in a run with a single.
The Spartans added two more runs in the third inning on a fielder’s choice and Natalie Ciamacco’s two-run triple.
Emily McClean finished with three hits for Montour, which outhit Chartiers Valley 12-3. Paige Fiedler added two hits, including an RBI single, and Caylee Moser and Alexa Richardson also had two hits. Richardson scored three times while Moser and Ciamacco each scored twice.
Montour’s Savannah McClean walked two and struck out two in the five-inning contest.
Burgettstown 4, Carlynton 2
Alice Kubatka collected three hits and drove in a run while Brooklyn Robinson had two hits and drove in a run to pace the Blue Devils to a Class 2A Section 3 win over the Cougars.
Robinson’s RBI single in the first inning put Burgettstown ahead for good and after the Blue Devils scored two runs in the second on a ground out and a sacrifice fly, Kubatka delivered an RBI single in the third to make it 4-0.
Ava Kimberling drove in Carlynton’s first run with a single and she stole home in the sixth inning to make it 4-2.
Kimberling and Carlee Hughes each had two hits for Carlynton.
Cornell vs. Bishop Canevin (2)
The two teams split a Class 1A Section 1 doubleheader, with Cornell taking the first game 12-7 and Bishop Canevin claiming a 12-2 win in the nightcap.
Gianna Gracyk went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs for Cornell in the opening game. Kenna Griffith added three hits and drove in two runs for the winners.
No details were available on Bishop Canevin’s win in the second game.
BASEBALL
Carlynton 21, Northgate 4
Isaac Anker collected four hits and drove in four runs and Graydon Harvey had two hits, knocked in four runs and scored five times as the Cougars overran the Flames in a four-inning non-section game at Northgate.
Carlynton rapped out 17 hits, with Michael Jenkins and Ashton Donlin each chipping in three hits and three RBIs.
Tyler Heinrich had two hits and drove in three runs for the winners, who led 3-1 after one inning and put the game away with a nine-run second inning. Donlin and Jenkins delivered RBI singles and five more runs scored on errors in that inning. The Flames committed five miscues in the game.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Montour 40, West Allegheny 0
Claire Bannon’s 66-yard touchdown run proved to be the key play offensively for the Spartans in their Section 4 victory over the Indians Thursday.
Jaieniyah Stoner led the way defensively for Montour with 10 flag pulls.
