Ava Ciummo singled three times, scored three runs and drove in a pair to spark Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 14-1 thumping of visiting Steel Valley Monday in a WPIAL non-section softball matchup.
Ciummo was the lone Charger to collect three hits on the day, but she had plenty of offensive help as OLSH banged out 14 hits and collected seven walks in overpowering the Ironmen.
Julia Pinter doubled, singled and knocked in four runs while Sophia Wasko, Mya Eshenbaugh and Camryn Hummel each drove in two runs along with Ciummo. Hummel had a pair of hits, both doubles, while one of Wasko’s hits was good for two bases.
Also adding a hit and an RBI for the Chargers were Olivia DiGiacomo and Kaylee Seskey.
Pinter’s bases-clearing double keyed a four-run first-inning rally for OLSH and she added an RBI single in the second inning.
Hummel limited Steel Valley to a single hit and one earned run to earn the win. She walked one and struck out four in five innings of work.
Northgate 4, Bishop Canevin 2
Bayleigh Hooper’s RBI double snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and pushed the Flames past the Crusaders in a non-section game at Northgate.
Hooper’s double, which came with no outs, scored Johna Abramowicz, who singled to lead off the sixth. Hooper later scored on an error to give Northgate its final run.
Bishop Canevin managed just two hits off Abramowicz, who walked two and struck out 17 batters.
The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game. Alexis Summers walked to lead off and Macie McClain followed with an inside-the-park home run. Northgate scored single runs in the first and second, with the second one coming on a steal of home.
McClain went the distance for Bishop Canevin, giving up six hits and four runs, with only one of those being earned. She walked four and struck out 11.
South Side 11, Carlynton 8
The Rams posted consecutive three-run rallies in the sixth and seventh innings to turn back the Cougars in a non-section matchup.
South Side trailed 7-5 entering the sixth inning but used a pair of run-scoring singles by Kenedi Cook and Madison Morrow to tie the score, then took an 8-7 lead on a run-scoring fielder’s choice.
In the seventh, Cook delivered a two-run single and Morrow followed with an RBI double to give the Rams a four-run cushion.
Carlynton would not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh. A single by Carlee Hughes, an error and Lucy Vetter’s RBI single made it 11-8. After a strikeout, a walk put runners at first and third and brought the potential tying run to the plate, but South Side pitcher Maya Ringhoff retired the next two batters to secure the win.
Hughes led Carlynton’s seven-hit attack with a single and a double, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Danica DeCecco and Sarah Loney both added doubles for the Cougars while Vetter had a pair of singles and Ava Barber contributed a two-run single.
Beaver 14, Montour 4
In a game played Friday, Shania Cope’s first-inning RBI single put Montour in front, but the Bobcats flipped the script by pushing across five runs on two hits in the bottom of the first. Rhiannon Rabassi’s two-run single keyed the rally.
Gabby McDowell pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief for Montour, allowing seven runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out one. She came on in relief of Caylee Moser, who started and gave up seven runs on three hits and five walks in one inning.
Cope went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Cayley Hughes led Montour with three hits. Emily McClean collected two hits for the Spartans.
