High school roundup: Ray throws for three TDs as Moon whips Ambridge in flag football

The Moon Area Tigers overcame a slow start to post a 32-0 victory over Ambridge Wednesday in a WPIAL Section 4 girls flag football game at Ambridge.

Syd Ray completed 15 of 20 passes, three of which went for touchdowns for the Tigers, who improved to 10-2 on the season.

Jules Corrado, Madi Wilson and Rese Kessler each hauled in a scoring pass from Ray.

Kendall Dydek contributed a touchdown run and Maria Cortes picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown.

Avery Pacheco intercepted a pair of Ambridge passes, and it was her second pick that jump-started the Tigers offense.

Gianna Reynolds also had an interception for Moon and both she and Cortes had five pulls (tackles) on defense.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

South Fayette 3, Montour 1

The Lions downed the Spartans in a Class 2A Section 4 match Tuesday night, winning by set scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.

Gaige Schoff had six kills for Montour while Isaiah Henderson had five kills and four aces. Gavin Lieder contributed three blocks for the Spartans.


Butler 3, Moon Area 0

The Golden Tornado downed the Tigers in a Class 3A Section 1 match Tuesday night. Butler won by set scores of 25-12, 25-14 and 25-19.

Ayden Anderson-Simmons had a season-high 11 kills and Shane John led the defensive effort with 11 digs.

Moon hosts Seneca Valley Thursday night in its last section matchup before hosting Central Catholic on Friday, which will also be Senior Day.


TRACK AND FIELD

WPIAL Team Championships

Both West Hills participants – Moon Area in Class 3A boys and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Class 2A girls – were eliminated Tuesday.

Moon fell 93-57 to Franklin Regional, which advanced to the second round. OLSH prevailed in three of its matchups but lost to defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Quaker Valley, 122-28; the Quakers advanced to the next level. The Chargers finished the season with a 10-1 record.

In the Class 3A boys meet, Moon boasted several individual and relay winners. Marcus McGill led the way by winning both the 100 meters (10.93 seconds) and the 200 (22.15). The Tigers also won the 4×400 relay event in 3:29.92.

Other Moon athletes finishing among the top four in their respective events were Jayden Smith (4-100, 3-200), Evan Senkevich (3-400), Jared Moyer (3-300 hurdles), Kennado Hamilton (4-300 hurdles), Elijah Novak (2-discus), Thaddus Novak (2-javelin), Michael Olszewswki (3-javelin), Matthew Smarsh (4-javelin), Jacob Bailey (4-high jump, 3-long jump), Hayden Miller (2-triple jump) and Noah Koepfer (3-pole vault).

In the Class 2A girls meet, OLSH’s Mira Mosca won the 3,200-meter race and the Chargers’ 4×400 relay team finished first as well. The relay group featured Lindsay Bressler, Ava Ziemniak, Eva Crofford and Hannah Hayes.

Hayes also broke her own school record in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 48.40 seconds. OLSH also had several personal records by Abby Mackin (long jump), Sanaa King (long jump and triple jump), Crofford (400) and Vivi Goshen (400).
