DuBois Central Catholic bolted out of the gate and scored seven first-inning runs on the way to a 12-2 victory over Bishop Canevin Saturday in a non-section baseball game in DuBois.
The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead on Carter Himes’ RBI single and then with two outs, a second run scored on a bases-loaded walk by Bishop Canevin pitcher Kole Olszewski.
An outfield error allowed two more runs to score to make it 4-0, and DuBois Central followed with an RBI single by Marek Hoyt and a two-run double by Alden Snowberger to finish the scoring.
Bishop Canevin broke through for a pair of runs in the fourth inning on an error and Nate Astor’s sacrifice fly to make it 7-2, but that was as close as the Crusaders would get.
DuBois Central added five more runs in the sixth to end the game with a 12-2 margin.
Bishop Canevin managed just one hit in the game – Tyler Maddix’s single with one out in the fourth inning.
Snowberger went all six innings and yielded just that one hit. He did not walk a batter and struck out 11.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Moon Area compiled an 8-3 record and defeated Pine-Richland in the playoffs to finish third in the Seneca Valley Boys Volleyball Tournament Saturday.
In pool play, the Tigers fell to Conneaut, 20-25, 20-25, then beat Bishop Guilfoyle, 25-20, 25-16; Bethel Park, 25-24, 25-21; and Penn Hills, 25-23, 25-17.
In first-round play, Moon defeated Bethel Park, 25-19, then edged Pine-Richland, 25-23, in the quarterfinals before losing to Canon-McMillan, 25-18.
Billy Sprott and Oliver Enos provided most of the offensive firepower for the Tigers and they also led in digs along with Hayden Dunn. Logan Anderson-Stewart had solid play as a setter.
Host Seneca Valley won the tournament and Canon-McMillan finished second.
