High school sports: Montour baseball blanks Central Valley; Spartans top OLSH in boys volleyball

Run-scoring singles by Gavin Foley, Matteo Weber and Zander Stern highlighted a four-run fourth inning that propelled Montour to a 9-0 victory over Central Valley Friday in a WPIAL non-section baseball game at Montour.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a walk, a fielder’s choice, a stolen base and Foley’s sacrifice fly.

Montour then added to its lead in the fourth with RBI hits from Foley, Weber and Stern and Stern’s steal of home.

Montour tacked on a sixth run in the fifth inning on an RBI ground out and the Spartans’ final two runs came in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball.

Weber led Montour’s nine-hit attack with a pair of singles and no one else had more than one hit.
Zachary Ciamacco scored three runs for the winners.

Four pitchers – Cyprian Slifkey, Tyler Puffer, Olliver Wovchko and Tommy Butts – combined to hold Central Valley to four hits and no runs while walking two and striking out 10.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Montour 3, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 0

The visiting Spartans pulled off a three-game sweep in a very close Class 2A Section 4 match Thursday night, posting scores of 25-23, 26-24, 25-23.

The victory evened Montour’s section record at 3-3 and left the Spartans 4-6 overall. OLSH fell to 1-5 in section play and 3-8 overall.

Dylan Huff racked up 11 kills while Wyatt Bucek had nine kills and four blocks for Montour.
Dom Lach contributed four kills and five aces to the win.

Isaac Tarbuk led OLSH with nine kills and had three blocks and two aces.

Noah Wheeler contributed eight blocks and Brady Roney added six for the Chargers. Patrick Altmar finished with two blocks and Aiden Curry added three aces.


North Allegheny 3, Moon Area 0

No other details were available from this Class 3A Section 3 matchup played Wednesday night.

The loss dropped the Tigers’ section record to 0-6 and left them 1-10 overall on the season.

North Allegheny improved to 5-1 in section play and 9-1 overall.


BOYS LACROSSE

Hampton 16, Moon Area 5

The Talbots posted a Class 2A Section 2 victory over the Tigers Thursday night. No scoring details were available.

The loss left Moon with a 2-5 record in Section 2 play and tied for eighth place with Freeport. The Tigers’ overall mark fell to 5-7.
